Radio in a 99 406HDI giving bother help needed

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

I’ve noticed it acting up this week are more, changing the station automatically then changing the source from radio to tape deck etc…., you’d think there was a button jammed inn are something down them line’s, then it started turning on and off, and today it turned off and now will not come back on

Some of these radios have a ribbon cable from the front panel that goes into a connector on the circuit board. Might be worth taking it apart and reseating this. The connectors usually have a clip that you pull towards the ribbon with a couple of fingernails to release the ribbon.

Just wanted to update on my current problem, I unplugged the radio Saturday and opened it up all wiring seemed ok nothing loose so screwed it back together and radio then worked grand 100%, Then on my way to Belfast on Sunday, my radio started acting up again turning on and off then the digital display on the dash would’t show if the radio was on are off etc.... , on top of all that then my Speedo started playing about all the Needle hand started flicking up and down like the car had suddenly been turne of off, so im now considering now I have a BARE wire going from the radio to the finger tip controls which is shorten the radio and messing with the Speedo, it’s the only conclusions I cant think off

So goin to look tonight to see have I a bare wire somewere

Anyone ever came across this problem before?? Are could advice me what else it mite be???

Thanks

Oops, I hope the two aren't related. If you keep the radio out does the speedo still play up?

Still sounds like a dodgy connection to me, maybe one of the ones in the back of it.

Electrics by Jack the Ripper?? Bluddy hell, it's a good job your radio went wrong before anything else, looks like you were driving a potential disaster!

Is that not a connector? (mjb??)

I dont know maybe it is a connector, i just assumed as it was beside the fuse box it was either a relay are fuse, Well i have it all tapped up safe and sound, i disconnected one of the fuse's as it wasnt serving no purpose just lying there, although the other spare fuse was someway linked to the Airbag, i'l give it a few days to see did it make my problem go away are make it worse, if any worse i'l be gettin wiring checked it case of other scary surprizes

I'm pretty sure it's the live feed from the battery to the fusebox, which supplies power for most of he car hence the fat wires. Don't quote me on it, i've not actually bothered to look it up for once :P

Chances are you'll find a few more bare wires if you strip the centre console (behind the climate control panel, under the ashtray) and check under the passenger footwell. I've removed a couple of nokia car kits from 406s now and the wiring was atrocious on both
