Turning over or running? Fault with the control box? When the light goes out it's showing you the engine is ready to start but it keeps the glowplugs lit for a while longer, if it goes straight off then it probably will run lumpy. As it actually starts it sounds like the glowplugs are working, although I reckon you should test for this pre/post heating thing, as well as have a look at the control box and connections. If all that checks out then maybe the bulb's blown

, the guy i bought it of said he has changed only two of the glow plugs and the two he hasnt changed are behind the fuel controller and leaves no room to get to them is there any way to get to them with out moving the fuel controller? or could it be the relay?

Re: 406 D8 1.9dt Starting issues with glow plug light
One main problem with the glow plug system is usually the connections coming loose or corroded connections on the timer unit (control box).
The best way to check the glow plug system is by using a test lamp.
Connect one lamp connection to earth, then connect the other to a one of the small nuts on one of the glow plugs, switch on the ignition and if the timer unit (control box) is good, the test lamp will light and go out after a few seconds.
To test glow plugs, take off the small nut on the main connector, ie, the feed that supplies all four plugs, then take off the other three connectors so that you can check each plug in turn.
Connect the test lamp to the battery positive terminal, switch on the ignition, then touch the top of each plug in turn with the other test lamp connection (where the nut fits onto) you should light up the lamp if the plug is working, if nothing happens, then that plug is faulty.
To help take out the plugs behind the injection pump, soak the part that screws into the cylinder head with WD40 or penetrating oil, then undo them with a spanner, they are a pain to get to, but it's the only way.

The board has in the last couple of months been inundated with SPAM and as a result Nick the owner has appointed new Mods to tackle this.
In addition any new member must have their first five posts approved; after this you can post freely so you should be fine now!

Re: changing glow plugs P reg 406 1.9 td
Best bet is to brutalise an 11mm or 12mm long series spanner and make a banana shapped spanner to reach behind the fuel pump. failing that ask the doctor for his sonic screw driver- fixes everythingdazpike wrote:hi ive recently purchased a P reg 406 1.9 td and she runs beautifully when she starts, the guy i bought it of said he has changed only two of the glow plugs and the two he hasnt changed are behind the fuel controller and leaves no room to get to them is there any way to get to them with out moving the fuel controller? or could it be the relay?

Shes doing it again, I now suspect the control box but its £50 or (20 pints of best) for a new one the battery recently died a death after 6 years.
She now turns over and cranks but take ages for her to splutter into life. The glow plug light doesnt come on first thing yet after a run if you
start her up the glow plug light works as normal.

Shop around, you should find one for £25 or less, even ebay!
406 estate, 2.1TD, I fixed her, then part exchanged her for a Mercedes E300TD Avantgarde Estate.
Hmmmm, straight 6 goodness!
