SEVER VIBRATION OVER 46MPH

I have a 406 1.9 DT 1999 plate, and yesterday, for the first time noticed an extremely sever vibration once over 42 mph, i first thought this was due to bad road or maybe cats eyes, i safely pulled over, and pulled away again, everything was fine then noticed the same fault half a mile away on a different road altogether. I have also noticed that the steering is not quite the same, it seems very very light, not what im used to.

Has anybody experienced this before>?

Tyre pressures OK? Have you maybe lost a balancing weight or something?

You could also jack the front up and give the wheels a spin - it's not impossible for the steel belts in radial tyres to fail. Give everything a good inspection too.

Make sure the wheels are securely fastened too

If its severe vibration then it may be the wheel bearings

there is the off chance it could be the lower engine mount, but that would disappear when you accelerate and re-appear when you decelarate.

I'd go with the wheel bearings. No way would it be as bad as you were describing if it was just an off balance tyre

Nah muppets who put my last front tyres on didn't bother balancing them, and it was very noticable at 40mph. At 60 I could barely hold the wheel.

They must be really out of balance, the D9's wheels need balancing but it's only noticeable over 80mph, seeing as how my Mrs is the most nervous passenger on the planet ( ) that doesn't happen enough to worry.

Still, if that's the case then it's worth checking for missing weights. The other favorite is kerbing, which could push the clip on type of weight around the wheel to somewhere inappropriate...

Firstly, is the vibration coming through the steering wheel? If so, then it's the front wheels, if the vibration is throughout the whole car, then it's rears.

Wheel bearings would give a loud humming noise if faulty, especially if you free wheel at the suggested speed.

I would go for the spinning of the wheels and looking for an out of shape tyre, I've had this many times...but don't rule out balancing.

A dodgy driveshaft is also possible, if it's front wheels.

Thank you very much to every body who has supplied an opinion to my query.

I have taken the car to the garage and drove extremely careful, and just happened to reach 40mph and the vibrations kicked in again, when I de celebrate this vibration stops and it CAN be felt all through the car. when I arrived at the Garage, I noticed the rear driver side wheel was leaning inward badly so the obvious choice would be something to do with the rear axel or barring as so many of you have kindly pointed out, the car is undergoing an MOT and I will let you all know what the out come is, once again thanks for all your feed back.

Well readsers, i have had confirmation from the Peugeot Garage and they advise that the reason for the Vibration is due to the (rear driverside wheel axel) being snapped in one place, the irronic thing is when i originaly posted this the whell was fine, i drove to the garage and noticed the wheel leaning in by about by sever degrees and very noticable. i am waiting for garage to now quote a price, will let you all know the damage.
