External temperature sensor

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

The pictures shown in this thread have the same manual wing mirror as my 406. I changed over a lot of parts from a clapped out executive to a good basic model some time ago, including the display with the temp gauge and the date, MPG etc. However, I could not change over the mirrors because of the connectors being different in the basic model (two wires only). I don't mind manual mirrors but I have a temp sensor left over and I'd love to be able to connect it to the display by using the vacant two wires in the door that lead up to the mirror.

My question is:

Does anyone know what these two wires are for? Where do the go? Can i solder the temp sensor onto these wires and lead them to the BSI or wherever the temp sensor is supposed to go to?

You'd think it strange to put the sensor in the wing mirror but I've been out today in my collegues Rav4 and after it was parked for a bit when we got back it said 14deg C on the display - yeah right! upon moving away it started dropping to 3deg C.

The Toyota's sensor appears to be in front of the Radiator and picks up heat when stationary.

Maybe the French are good at something afterall :?

Sorry, not much help to the OP here

There's really not many better places to put a temperature sensor... Anywhere forward of the bulkhead will be affected by engine heat and potential underbonnet pressure differentials. The boot's an oven in summer. You want it in the shade so it can report the ambient air temperature, and the mirror will reflect half the light away...

You can change the mirrors, you just need the sockets from a model already fitted with 'leccy's and a load of wire and heatshrink!
I don't know what the existing two wires are for to be honest, I don't think they go inside the car from memory.

Yo Teamster! Thanks for that but do the wires for the electric mirrors go all the way to the BSI or somewhere nearer? If so I'll have to get wires from a scrappy. Sounds dificult. Its a touchy subject here because most of you decadent swines have executives or GLX's!!

Hey Eoin! :)
I've just noticed you've got a D9
To be honest I don't know how yours would be wired, I've only done it to a D8.

Teamster, you have got me thinking

Its a D9 and has a manual d8 mirror fitted. Look at the pic and you can see a plastic fin which my mirror has not got so im sure its a d8 mirror.

Hey Rappy, you got it right with my mirror I think.

Its not a photo of my mirror but my mirror is the same. The early basic D9's have the same black manual fin shaped mirror that is shown in that photo and that most D8's have. So, what i was thinking was that those two wires left dormont in the D9 beside the wing mirror have the same function as the two wires in the D8 which are left dormont also. Any D8 owners got any ideas?

Just for the record. The basic D9 is spartan in comparison to what I've done to my one. I've added the following last summer:

Seats
MFD
Chrome Surrounds
CD Player
I painted door handles and wing mirrors.

So it looks like an lx but is in fact an l
