Gearbox.

Post by johnny406 »

I have a problem that is getting annoying my 406 2.0 16v GLX seems to Crunch into 1st gear....

It problems seems to be worse when it's cold

I don't really know how to describe it, it's like a clunk not a crunch or grind

The Clutch has just been renewed to no avail..

Fine in all the other gears, easy to get into reverse.

The Clunk goes through the whole car and the passengers notice it.

If you go from 2nd into 1st there is no clunk.

Any ideas?

I presume this when the car's not moving. Mine don't like going in first unless the car's stationary. :?

You could try putting it in second, then in first.

Cold would be the oil dragging because it's thicker. Unusual that it doesn't do it into reverse too.

You could also try changing the oil.

Steve as always your a legend usually the first to reply! but I've had the oil changed with the clutch replacement, it went bang and broke the fork due to the stupid pull-type that is the peugeot clutch on most models bar the 2.1td and the newer HDI and Petrol Engines.

Thought it could be clutch drag but nope clutch replaced and still there.

It's strange 2nd then 1st is perfect it gets better when it's warm and if you dip the clutch you get the clunk but if you take it outta 1st and put it back in no clunk, it does it when stationary and when moving if you go from 3rd to 1st for example, they I learned the new block changing way not 5th, 4th, 3rd etc :P and my dad doesn't like block shifting haha, oldies amuse me somewhat.

Huh? the 2.1 and the HDis (110 up) use the ML5T with the pull clutch just like your 2.0. :?

Umm, I'm not really sure what you're saying there, are you saying if you take it out of first and put it back in again without using the clutch it's ok but if you use the clutch it goes clunk?

So it was like this before you had the clutch changed?

(I can feel my legend status slipping :( )

Sorry my posting is unstructured as illogical hence you difficulty in under standing.....

Right if I dip the clutch bring it up and then dip,
it will crunch are the crunch/clonk or whatever if I keep it dipped, put into neutral or any other gear then back in 1st no crunch....
Also when the engine isn't running it can dip, bring up the clutch or not use it at all and put it in and out of any gear without any clunks, crunches etc....
Meh I'm going to go on my favourite ebay and buy a new gearbox, but I wish I had an inspection pit to fit it :/

Is it the syncromesh but that doesn't explain why 2nd to 1st works hmmm.....?
I might keep it and hope it doesn't kill anymore clutches or anything.... Bloody annoying though the cars immaculate and perfect especially with the LPG conversation, and when my new interior is in..... Drool Drool and More Drool.

Nope Nope I'm pretty certain the 2.1TD is a Hydraulic Clutch although the Haynes Manual could be lying, I'd put a small bet on it but given your legendariness I'm sure you'd win and best not

Hydraulic pull clutch.

That now sounds like an engine/gearbox mounting but I can't imagine why it would it be worse when cold
