2.1 TD drunk a puddle and didnt like it!!!

Post by nipper76 »

Hiya peeps.
Went out for a drive yesterday, and we;ve had some nasty rain causing some flooding.
ANYhow we go down a nice country land and find that the road has flooded. so i sat and pondered about going through it. But i decided it would be ok after i saw a jogger jog through only ankle deep and a little honda civic bubble though it.
So i SLOWLY drive through it and just as i get to the other side..... shes dies.

So someone helped me tow her out of the water and i sit and w8 for a bit. turn her over, and it was as if the batt had gone dead.
just didnt want to go. got the multimeter out and the batt was fine. checkd the ain filter and it was soaked.... must have sucked the water up like a straw as the air intake is sooo low to the ground.
so i disoconnect the air filter
Anyhow a couple of hours pass and i got my bruv to connect my car up to his, and crank her over. and after a wile she started to turn over. LOADS AND LOADS of smoke poured out of her. but eventually she stays running. and so i drive home. smoke still pouring out.
brought some redex for diesels and poured that in... along with some more fuel. and take her for a drive.
today i start her up and still lumpy. so have taken her for anouther drive.
she seeems quicker than usaral. but its just lumpy and sounds like a right tank. and it SMEELS like a diesel boat. oh and smokey still....

Can anyone advise me please???

many thanks
dan

sounds like the engine has hydrauliced which is never good
pug modified the air filters so they had foam on the base to stop the filter collapsing and being sucked through into the engine

have you taken the original (now wet) filter outta the box and then tried it ????

this happened to me with a petrol car not so long back and i was advised to tow it back home, then take the spark plugs out and crank it over a few times, which cleared the water out of the head, then do a service. it was fine after, loads of water came out the head when i cranked it over.

so presuming the principle is the same for diesels, i'd take the glow plugs out and crank her over then change the air filter, oil and oil filter and see how the car runs

might also want to get some wd40 on a rag and wipe any electrical connectors over to drive the water out of them if they got soaked

Local roads round here flood quite often, so I think I may well remove that air intake pipe on mine. Set up some sort of air feed from the grill area instead.

Nearly killed the Missus HDi in a similar way, although when it eventually died (near enough out of the flood) the water was an inch below coming in through the doors. Got a tow across to the farm where she was and tried tow staring it on the way, started, died, started, died, started and idled! Job was a goodun. I was so chuffed it was untrue! We went back home a different way obviously.

Oh gawd, that's how I lost my last 406 :(
Hydrolock is where the barrels have filled with water and the engine can't turn over, generally bending a conrod or two and causing much cost

Spot on Teamster! That's the normal outcome with sucking in water.

A good few years back, Renault had a serious problem with the Espace diesels taking in water through the air intake and wrecking engines because the intake was too low. They had to fix them at their cost, if my memory is correct.

If you take note of some Land Rovers, you will see a Snorkel attached through the drivers side wing and windscreen pillar, this is for going through deep water.

After Trem1 wrote his '6 off in a ford, what I did to my tubby was to drill a ~7mm breather hole in the intake pipe just below the filter box. First thing I did when I got the V6 too.

Won't let me drive through lakes, but it'll probably give me the ability to submerge the intake with the engine idling (the icv connectors are about 10mm diameter) or a second or two at low throttle
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

What would be the effect of just removing the intake hose from the filter box?

Good point that. Or re-routing the intake hose so it's up near the top of the engine bay, with some mesh over the end to stop crap getting in

if your fully comp you can claim off your insurance, its called water-damage it worked for me but be warned i lost 9 years no claims for it so check your covered first,

ive got a 407 now and will not drive trough water that is ant deeper than my tyres, if it is deep enough to hit the rim i will find another route

Exactly what I did, luckily it was a quick payout because it was during those floods a year and a half ago.
