Hi All,
has anyone used an oil additive in there 406 TD?
i have a bit of a noise when i get over 3000 revs which i can only describe as a pinking sound (if it was petrol).
not sure if its just wear on the engine of something else but in the past i have put an additive in the oil which has tightened things up a bit and aided performance.
Any comments would be welcome.

Re: Oil Additives
Hello Stu
I have operated a fleet of commercial vehicles and serviced and maintained thousands of diesel cars over the years and in my humble opinion additives are a waste of money. Modern oils have all the required ingredients of additives already in and if you follow the manufacturers recommended change intervals and use the correct grade for the engine type and the season you will get many thousands of miles from your motor. The noise you are experiencing will probably be a fuelling issue caused by a number of faults. To begin eliminating some of them you could start by simply cleaning and drying all the electrical connections.
Check the air filter etc. The slight rattle you hear is just the same as you rightly observe as pinking in a petrol. On a diesel it will also show as a grey/black exhaust emission at the point it rattles. There are some things you may not be able to check without an oscilloscope and in high mileage cars the injectors for atomisation. This occurs when some of the fine spray holes get blocked or the injector seat and needle is worn causing the fuel to dribble instead of a fine mist being injected. If you want to be more specific you can send me a private message and I'll try and help you.
