406 Suspension!

Post by STALLED »

Hey,

I'm currently in the process of getting the parts ready to refresh the rear end of the 406. The car has done 160,000km and things are getting a tad tired back there - Bit of a clunk and a knock when going over bumps. So far I have bought a set of anti roll bar links but I was wanting to know what else I should replace whilst I have the rear wheels off the car?

Image

Is there another bush which you have to purchase to match these - I can't quite work it out from the manual I have and I don't have access right now to a Haynes? I'm also assuming that I need the link rods - How many do I need...my mate who is a mechanic said he would help me do the work if I bought the parts - I'm assuming it's just the two?

What about any other individual bushes?

Thanks heaps 406oc'ers!

Are you thinking we forgot you? :(

I think the usual one is this rear suspension track arm (517839?) but, unless you want to replace the whole lot ($$$) you should really have a look round under there.

As for Haynes (Book of Lies), I can get stuff from Amazon here so I'd think you can too.

I think the main culprit is the anti roll bar mounting bushes! replacement requires the fuel tank to be lowered to get to the off side one (where the filler neck is).

This is what's wrong with mine but it passed the MOT like it. Annoying noise though as the bush is one of those hard ones and crashes over bumps in the road.

As Welly says the antirollbar bushes are the main problem; you should change the top links while you're at it too which will require rear wheel alignment afterwards.
If you can get enough access have a look at the condition of the rubbers on top of the suspension springs; while I was getting my wheel alignment done the guy pointed out that they were pretty badly perished; not a bad job to do, compress the springs and you can swap them over.

anyone got some pictures for those of us that know squat about suspension?
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

No... But I've got to change the handbrake cable at the weekend so I'll take some pics while I've got the wheel off :)

That would be great - Thanks so much!

Anyone know how many hours are required to do the work - Just trying to minimize costs! Spent too much bloody money on this car already and it's only not even February!

Give yourself 4-5 hours allowing for seized bolts and skinned knuckles :) (And tea and fag breaks! :cheesy: )
It's not a terribly difficult job, just fiddly! I had trouble getting the bottom nut off the drop links and ended up stripping quite a bit down to get to it. You will need spring compressors!
I'll post the photos tomorrow evening once I've finished on the car :)

Thanks matey! I don't know if things will be seized because we don't salt our roads or have the rust problems you guys do. It's pretty common here to have a classic car which is mechanically pharrrrrked but have the most awesome rust free body - Think old Citroens etc

Right; these are the pics I took on Saturday when I was pissing about with the handbrake cables (which are completely rotten :frown: )
The last photo is irrelevant but at least I've got a photo of my car on here now
