Cabin Blower

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Cabin Blower

Post by chrisr »

Help,
I posted a while ago saying that I thought that I had sorted my blower.Unfortunately it was not so and I have a blower that only works about 50% of the time.
It quite often doesn't work in the mornings when I am going to work and with all this ice and snow it is not good and could be dangerous due to visibilty problems.
Somebody mentioned temperature sensors around the cabin and I was wondering if one was in the interior roof light assembly.
The reason why I was asking is because when I switch the ignition on there is a noise from there that sounds a bit like a small low revving electric motor noise.A sort of low buzzing noise.
Any ideas as I am clutching at straws now.
Cheers.

The next time you get chance to look at it with the heater NOT working, try doing the tests that I posted a while back......

With the engine running.....

Get a test lamp and check if you have power to the module, thick red and black wires going in, then check if you have power coming out, thick red and black wires coming out.

Power going in, but not out, means a module fault, no power going in means no power from the ignition switch/fuse box, etc.

Power going in and out means a fault connected with the motor or the spade connectors that mjb pointed out last time.

I reckon the noise you mention is unrelated. Assuming you have climate control, theres a little fan in the interior light unit that draws cabin air over the interior temperture sensor. Yours is either rubbing on something. or its got a bit worn/noisy. Don't this will have anything to do with your blower problem.

Thanks for the replies jasper5 and dogslife.
I took a look at the wiring a bit earlier and am having some difficulty determining which wires are in and which are out of the control module.
(I assume that the control module is built into the motor, N registration P8 ?)
I can see a thick black and a thick red wire going into the side of the motor through a grommet and the other ends of these wires going to two spade connectors, are these ins or outs?
I am afraid that I need a bit more info if you could possibly help me.
Many thanks.

Ok Chris, this is how mine is (If the earlier ones are different, I'm sure someone will tell you).....

The module is behind the centre console, there are two connectors on the module, the ones on the right are going into the module, the ones on the left go to the motor, two lots of thick red and black wires. I hope this helps.

hI jasper5,
i believe that according to the Haynes manual for my car the blower control module is inside the body of the motor.
I think that I will have to try another module or motor in place to see if that cures it.
Many thanks for your reply.

Ah, Haynes says it's there so it must be  (look everywhere else first  )

Again, if you are not sure, check to see if you have live to those two wires, ie, red and black ones, no live means wiring etc faulty, live means motor/module if module is in the motor.

Do a quick check to see If the module is behind the console, you only need to look to the right from the motor housing. It will be obvious if it's there.

Hi jasper5,
yes you are right,I can still check if power is getting to the motor or module.
There are new modules which fit inside the motor on ebay for around £40.
Many thanks again.

I have taken the fan motor out and the module is inside the motor.
I have tested the module and it appears to be US.There is a coil winding with a sprung loaded copper contact (don't know the technical term) on the underside of the module.I have tie wrapped the contact together so that I now have full blower all of the time until I can buy a new module.
I can't alter the speed of the fan on the dash but it is nice to have some heat and demisting now.

Well done!

I call those "wandering resistors" that's what they were called in the old days anyhow. This is because the contact moves along the coil varying the resistance and slowing down or speeding up the motor. The later ones are a circuit board and some sort of processor.

BTW, I've replaced two modules this week and have one to change next tuesday (non of them Peugeot). Cheapest was a Micra £30, most expensive Nissan Vanette,£42.
