New V6 saloon owner

Post by bra1nDeaD »

Hi All,

First of all i would like to say that this is a great place for info on this great car.

I recently bought a 2002 - 51 plate - V6 automatic saloon. It has done 49K Miles and I love it :cheesy:

There are a few things that need some inprovement/fixing though.

First some background information:
Just after I bought it I stoped for some petrol, but when I started the car the bettery was flat. After a nice guy gave me a jump start and I drove home I tried to charge the battery (which was still the original french one and 7 years old) but my charger said it was full after 15 minutes of charging. I have bought a new battery which I have not connected yet to see how long the old one lasts, and it does up to now. However, sometimes when I close the doors with the remote they dont, and i hear a loud beep indicating the doors didnt close but the alarm is on. And starting the car seems sometimes a bit slow. Other then that the battery seems still fine.

Once in a while when i start the car this error message pops up on the screen: Breaking system failed (or something similar) and I hear a few beeps (beep beep [pause] beep [pause] beep beep).
Now because it only happens once in a while I thought that it might be because it has not enough power for it, but I'm not sure. I am planning on hooking up the new battery soon but I would like to know if somebody has had this experience before.

Also the engine is making a slight pulsating shaving noice when the engine is worm and running idle. As soon as I press the gas the sound seems to speed up a bit but quickly disapears. When I open the bonnet I can hear the sound coming from the upper left (facing the engine) side.
My own thought is that is a belt or belt tensioner. Maybe the campbelt or the alternator belt?

Another issue, I read the manual and it said in there that when I press the right button on top of the wiper lever (I have two little arrows on the lever) it should switch the screens for the trip computer, and also repeat the last message from the sat nav. But this button seems to do nothing at all. I dont see anything about the trip computer, do I have one?

I am also looking for some information about hidden menu's. I've read somewhere on a french forum (with pictures) about a hidden 'debug' menu where you could see GPS/ODO/GYRO configuration. I have the link at home (I'm at work now) so I will post that later. My french is not that great so I used a website translator and this is (I think) what it said:
- press 'menu'
- long press 'esc'
- press 'left' twice
- long press 'esc'
But it does not seem to do anything

I'm also investigating if I can add POI's into the Sat Nav cd (specially speed camera's), I found a link where they were able to manually add them. But I was testing to see if I could use a backup of my cd first, and it seems that it can't detect backups cd. Sat Nav sais it has no cd. I'm looking into cleaning the lens to see if that helps.

Anyway, any information/help is very appreciated and I will update my progress of my issues regular (maybe in seperate forums).

Thanks,

Does sound like a dead battery... Hopefully a new one will sort your electrical issues.

For the belt I'd suggest taking the alternator belt off and starting it. Should instantly be able to tell if it's something on the cambelt (in which case, get a tow to a garage!) or if (more likely) it's the PAS pulley, aux tensioner, or something not immediately critical

As for satnav, buy a TomTom

Hi MJB,

I am going to change the battery tonight, hopfully the messages will disapear 8)

I have just ordered a mechanic's stethoscope for under 4 quid, hopefully I can pinpoint the sound with that without having to open up the engine yet. I'll have a look soon.

I already have TomTom on my phone :cheesy: which i have been using happely for some time now, and even still. But because I dont use it that often and I really don't like my cockpit clothed up full of wires and I kind of like to puzzle, I am going to try to find out how to do this :cheesy: :cheesy:

Thanks

Welcome,

The V6 is a great engine, so I am sure you will love the car. Definately replace the battery - you will be forever chasing strange electrical warnings, non-starting symptoms and being stranded in remote locations otherwise.

Cannot help conclusively on the pulsating noise, but I would not simply ignore any noises you are hearing from the cambelt area - the potential for expensive remedies is too great. If you are sure it is an unusual noise, MJB's suggestion of removing the alternator belt is a sensible one - how good are you with a set of spanners?

Photo-guide when I did my recent major cambelt service is here - http://www.trackandrace.com/Workshop, it explains how to get at the alternator (aka auxiliary) belt and remove it.

Martin.

Hiya mate, welcome! :cheesy:

Can't help with most of it I'm afraid, but I can report that the satnav will usually recognise a backup copy (there's on in mine now), so I guess yours needs a clean.

Dunno whether you have the trip computer, but I can't imaging a V6 with sat nav wouldn't have one. Pressing in the end of the wiper stalk should cycle through the trip computer functions, you get instantaneous mpg and miles left, then 2 "trips" of average mpg, average speed and distance travelled. You reset the trips by pressing and holding the end of the wiper stalk. I'd forgotten about it repeating the last sat nav instruction but that's true too, ain't used my sat nav for ages 'cos it's pants (got tom tom  ).

I'd also be interested to know more about this hidden menu.... :o

"Navigation Diagnostic" brings up this...

...and "Versions" brings up this, no idea what they mean though

"Reset Display" just takes you back out.

Very interesting, makes me wonder what other hidden menus there are.... :?

Thank you all for this worm welcome 8)

I am no machanic but I do like to puzzle and I have a technical background. I'm a computer programmer with an interest in anything technical. I have repaired my first car a few times, it was a 205 diesel. Replaced all the brakes and brake cilinders, steering column and a drive axle. (Sorry if I call things with a wrong name, I am Dutch and just lived in the UK for 9 months). However, that was in the Netherlands where I had a friend who had a 4 pilon bridge to raise the car. that makes it so much easyer.

That Photo-guide is quite extensive, when ever I start opening the engine up I'll sure use it. :cheesy:

Those pictures is exactly what I found, what I could read from that french forum was that the Supplier could recalibrate the ODO meter with this, but I'm not sure. Did you get this with the key combinations that I wrote here? Because they dont work on my car :(
Just like the trip computer, I see no evidence that I have one. It could be that my stalk button is broken, but I have a hunch that somehow I have just a different version of my board computer software. I saw some images before of the main menu where there were 3 items where I only have 2 items (navigation & screen configuration). Does anybody know of different versions? Maybe before or after a certain year?

I have changed the battery last night and have not seen any error messages since, but I did only two trips yet
I also opened up the cd drive for the Sat Nav to clean it. Those 4 blody small screws are so tight, I had a very small screw driver that fitted perfectly, but because they were so tight I scraped off all the metal from the screwdriver  (Well, it was a cheap screw driver anyway :) ) But using a bigger screwdriver that did not fit and filing it to make it fit gave me anough strength to get them loose :P
I cleaned the lens and this morning just before I got to work I fitted the CD drive back but when I entered the CD it didnt swallow. I guess there is some machenical thingy not just right when I put it back together again. I'll have to take it out and open it up again. 8)

I have also noticed that the top (bigger) display gets dead pixels after running for a while. They start at the top, fading out like it is sliding downwards. Maybe it's the heat from the heating. Is this a known issue?

Thanks

Yup, exactly what you wrote, the "long press esc" you need to hold for a good 5 secs. Also I did it with the ignition on but without the engine running, don't know if that makes any difference.

The "ODO" bit is all about the sat nav I think, can't see you being ably to adjust the car's main odometer from there... :? :?

I tried to press long for more then 10 seconds and still nothing happened. I really thing my software version is weird :? Maybe i need an update.

I got a copy of my sat nav cd working now :) After cleaning it (didnt look filthy at all) I still had some trouble reading copy's but after writing a cd on a different make it worked. I guess there are some quality issues with different makes of CD's. I've read that CD made in Japan are OK  I still had to eject the CD a couple of times and re-enter it to make it work though. I think that whole system is rather sensitive.

That leaves me only with the stalk not working and a slight noise from the engine. Hopefully my stethoscope will arrive soon :)

It'd make sense that it hooks up to the odometer for speed data. Combined with a form of gyroscopic sensor it would allow the car to make a damn good guess at where you are when you can't see any satellites (in a tunnel, surrounded by large buildings, etc)

The D8 V6 doesn't have a trip computer either, even in Executive trim (thankfully it's possible to retro-fit 8) )

I've seen D7, D8 & D9 all over the place, what does it stand for? From a certain year?

If I want to retro-fit it, where do I start? Do I have to go to the stealer? Or can I order it online and fit it myself? I think it probably also needs some software changes which only the stealer can do, or am I wrong?
