Trip computer AND radio display?

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Trip computer AND radio display?

Post by mjb »

Is it possible on a D8 to have both the trip computer and the radio display operational at the same time?

I've just put the OEM stereo back in my V6 ready for it to be sold, and it seems the trip computer switch options are like this:

1) Radio in main section, temperature to the top right
2) Temperature in main section, trip computer to the top right
3) As 1)
4) Radio in the main section, no temperature

Am I missing something, or are the radio and trip computer displays mutually exclusive?

Which one would you rather have on a car, a trip computer but a radio without a display, or a radio but no trip computer? I'm tempted to leave it showing the radio, and leave a note in the glovebox on how to enable the trip computer if wanted. What do you think?

BTW, V6 saloon... make me an offer NOW! :)

What a b@stard, I was hoping it would display both as I'm still using the oem head unit and haven't wired up the trip functions yet.
Shame there's not enough room to pop a second trip comp in!

TBH I did rush the job a bit - I just turned the key off between settings, but I've remembered there's a permanent live in there, and sometimes disconnecting it is the only way to reset it

Thankfully I didn't push the computer all the way back in, so I think I'll have a more thorough play tomorrow

Let me know! Otherwise they must have used different head units in cars that came with the trip computer :(

Edited to mention that setting '4' has no temperature display. I know what you're thinking. I unplugged the display a few times even turned the engine on, but no trip comp+radio :(

I don't understand it - AFAICT the radio just outputs its display using the VAN bus packet data protocol (same way the ECU sends fuel data), so I don't get how a different HU could make a difference

There's always the chance that buggering around with the display so much (and never having a fitting screwdriver to hand  ) has damaged the switch on mine, but I doubt that's the case as 4 IS different. Maybe there's a different wiring setup we've overlooked, or maybe multiple part numbers for the display?

Hang on a sec... Did any models with the trip computer factory-fitted have a CD changer?

Haven't got a clue. I'm surprised your soon to be ex V6 didn't have it as standard to be honest, it was about as top spec as you can get!
My tubby exec doesn't even have gas struts on the bonnet, just a plain old prop! :frown:

What I mean, is that maybe the changer-equipped models have too much crap to throw up on the screen and the pug engineers decided there wouldn't be enough room left to have a trip computer display without it looking crap?

The difference between the tubby exec and v6 exec is small (besides the engine-related, obviously). The tubby had headlamp washers which weren't connected up, and it didn't have variable power steering. I suspect the only other difference (lights on the foor cards) came from it being made a year later...

It should do! Is it a replacement bonnet without the ball joint balls for the struts? Tell-tale sign would be to find the balls on the side of the engine bay and see if there's any wear on them :)

That's possible, I've not come across anyone that had it factory fitted!

Hmm, I've not noticed any, you've got me curious now! The bonnet paint is a perfect match to the rest of the car, maybe they were introduced from '97 onwards :?

Check for the little ball mounts sticking up, as you can see slightly back from the strut mount covers...

Wow it looks strange without the magic red 1368 wire :D

Nope, I definitely haven't got ball joints there. Thanks for the piccy though :)
Have you had any luck shifting the V6 yet?

Not yet, interested? It's currently not too far from you, just the other side of Swindon :cheesy:

I was tempted to be honest :supafrisk:
I just cannot justify it, especially after all the work I've done to the tubby :)
