90 or 110 hp
Hi All
I need to get another estate after some holigan burnt mine out
I had a 2.1 td 110 hp and would prefer a 110 hdi due to cheaper tax but finding it hard to find a decent one There seems to be plenty of 90 hp ones around
Does anyone have experience of both as i'd like to know if you notice much difference on the road with less horse power
Also as i'm looking at a newer model there are a more gadgets available Can these be troublesome ?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Re: 90 or 110 hp
Hi Scoot.
I think opinions will vary on this, but you should consider the following:
The Hdi 90 & 110's were brought out to replace the 1.9 & 2.1 TD's respectively and have very similar outputs to the older engines, but power delivery is different. Generally the HDi's have more immediate grunt at low revs, but don't like to rev as much.
The 406 is a sizeable car and a 90 in standard form is not going to be very lively, whereas the 110 is more convincing.
Some of the later 110's have diesel particulte filter systems, (FAP) and I've seen data which suggests the maximum torque is down from 184 lb/ft of the earlier 110's to 155 lb/ft, or about the same as a 90.
110's have dual mass flywheels in which the rubber element can fail & be expensive to replace, they are more complex, but are more efficient and more economical than the 90, (at least on paper).
Both engines can be remapped to give more power at reasonable cost, the 90 can be tweaked to 125 BHP for about £200 and similar gains can be had with the 110. Remapped 90 gets good write-ups on here.
I'm sure other forum members, more knowledeable than myself will have different opinions and hopefully will add their comments too.

Re: 90 or 110 hp
The clutch/fly on the 110 is the only problem really but to be fair most would just slap in a solid conversion now but the labour is fearce at around 8 hours
I'd prefer the 110 as you can get it in 'exec' guise and it also has rear discs which (depite what you might hear) are very good if serviced regular (clean/copper slip on slides/guides).
Only the later 110's are cheaper to tax cos they've got an 'air dozer' doo-dad but I'm not entirely convinced that any 110's actually came with a FAP system????
There's a place on t'internet that does a remap and replacement intercooler for the 110 to bring it up to 160bhp

Re: 90 or 110 hp
I'm biased, because I've got a 136, which I'm pleased with. It's smooth, quiet and powerful, but fuel consumption is heavier than I'd hoped. I drive fairly hard, mostly out of town & get about 42mpg - my previous Citreon Xsara Hdi 90 did 48/49mpg. The 136 can be economical, (previous owner recorded an average of 46mpg over 5500 miles).scoot wrote:So would i be better trying to get a 136 hp ???

They are not very common and are certainly more complex than other HDi's. The FAP, (diesel particulate fiter), system puts most people off, see this description. Potentially expensive - FAP needs cleaned/replaced, eolys additive tank needs refilling & computer reset every so often depending on how it's driven maybe every 50 to 80,000 miles. I knew about this before getting mine, I wanted something with enough go to make light work of long journeys with family, luggage, dogs. All the alternatives I considered seemed to have potential problems of equal magnitude.
Most 406 owners don't share my opinion & would avoid the 136 - (they're probably being too polite to tell you), but I like it.

Re: 90 or 110 hp
I've never driven a diesel 406, but there's been a lot of people here who've had a hdi90 re-mapped to somewhere in the region of 120bhp and have had nothing but good things to say about it. A few of those have reported impressive mileages since having it done, so it seems to be a very good option to consider.
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

They don't seem to list anything Peugeot any more, just L/Rover & VW

Just mailed Celtic Tuning, had a remap done by SP Tuning about a year ago but that only pulls back approx 136bhp, plus i've added cat back stainless exhaust and also induction kit it in the pipe line too, both things i hear you should ideally do before a remap
