Possible binding brake(s)

hmm I had my suspect wheel off the ground the day after getting the car, and there was a grinding (and a rattle), but it was extremely quiet. I'll check the backs when I'm bleeding the brakes down there

Would the diff not vary in sound dependent on cornering, acceleration and braking? My noise seems to be based purely on speed, although I've not tried wheelspinning it yet.

Yes the tone would change on cornering and speed variations but if it's just the pinion maybe only a bit - these pinions are helical and so growl when knacked - Hypoid would whine. The planetory gears don't spin much to cause a lot of noise. Hope I'm wrong.

To eliminate the diff, drive the car and take it out of gear, if the noise is there whilst freewheeling/coasting you have a wheel bearing, driveshaft , or tyre problem.If the noise is there only in gear, then you can suspect gearbox/diff etc.

One other test you could do is use reverse gear, if he growl clears or changes tone then you may have confirmation though the gear will still try to part. Spiral Bevel and Hypoid gears put the thrust on the end of the shaft and had more sliding motion on the teeth whereas helical pinions have radial thrust, that's what causes the growl since if the bearing is worn it tries to push the two gears away from each other giving more clearance between the teeth - hence the growl. As speed increases the torque is less so it goes a bit quieter. Do make sure you have eliminated wheel bearings and CV's.

PS if you are going to do this job yourself it's easy and much more satisfying. You might try draining the oil to see if there are any metal bits in it.

It's pretty much shagged. Seems like the slave cylinder's sprung a leak. More fluid went over the gearbox than into the bottle, and now it's completely devoid of fluid so I can't drive it until I get it fixed. Thankfully the slave's only £21 for a D9

That's D8 territory where it's all a one-piece sealed system (no ability to bleed it so you're buggered if you open it up)

The D9 has discrete master+slave cylinders (with a bleed nut on the slave) and detachable pipework fed from the brake fluid reservoir.

The local Isuzu garage (on the walk to work, is an authorized pug parts distributor) can get me the slave by Friday so I'm going to try the main dealer (bitch of a walk), eurocarparts (almost impossible to walk to) and gsf (taxi time) before I put the order in.

Well the main dealer says Friday and ECP says they've got one on the shelf but it's £25+vat EuroCarParts being more expensive than a dealer! What is the world coming to?

Still, after I mentioned the stealer price, he's knocked it down to £21.50+vat (dealer £18.40+vat) so I'm off down there at lunchtime if I can borrow someone's car (LOVE that bit of my insurance )and hopefully I'll be driving to work tomorrow
