ticking but not starting

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

ticking but not starting

Post by bigblue2 »

went to move my car today and when i unlocked the door i noticed the central locking didn't work, then when put the key in the ignition the dash lights were dimmer than usual but not that much that would indicate the battery was dead but then i noticed they were flashing and there was a clicking sound coming from under the bonnet, also noticed no power to imobillisor key pad, the dash lights flash in time to the click which is a little quicker than the indicator flasher click, tried battery leads etc and they are all tight, any ideas please as i'm confused, thanks

no only a test light :( need to get one though, it ran fine on saturday afternoon though, its not even trying to turn over though, would have though if dead battery it would try and turn over or no dash lights at all, but as never had a dead battery i wouldn't know for certain but the battery was totally flat when i got the car and took 2 days to charge so guess it maybe damaged :(

Two days sounds like masses of capacity. My one went from all to nothing in a matter of seconds, it measure ok but turning the ignition on the voltage dropped out of it and all I had was dim panel lights and ticking relays...

the clicking is when i turn the ignition on, it doesn't change when i turn the key to start position, but no lights on the keypad was my concern :?

Sounds like a faulty battery - possibly bad internal connection - this can be very bad news, generates heat, possibly sparks & lead-acid batteries give off hydrogen gas when charging. I would change it soonest.

Definately the battery, check to see if the alternator is charging it well.
