What's wrong with your Pug?

Post by Captain Jack »

I started a similar topic before but thought I would start a fresh one :)

We all love our '6's, but I doubt there is one which doesn't have at least one little problem. So, I'll start:

1) Clutch pedal ended up on the floor one morning after overnight. Brought it back up manually and it hasn't repeated the ordeal just yet. Suspects are:
  • - Air in hydraulics
  • - Dodgy "helper spring" under the pedal
  • - Dodgy master/slave cylinders
2) Relatively loose gear stick. Several times selected 4th rather than 2nd. Will need to check the linkages or the gear stick mount. Gear stick doesn't move with acceleration.

3) Weird whistling noise at speeds over 60mph. Suspected tyres - had the same problem in my other car. Will rotate them and see if the noise goes away. Or it could be related to... :arrowd:

4) Second part of the undertray has dislodged itself and had to be removed. Will need to zip-tie that back on.

5) Tracking crap - keeps veering to the left and to go straight, the steering wheel needs to be turning slightly to the right. Paid £82.80 to have tracking done on Tuesday and, although, they said tracking was out by 1.2 degrees on some wheels, the problem is still there. (tossers)

6) Loose ignition barrell. I am guessing something holding it has become loose so will need to superglue that back in.

Where's Jasper aka Bodgitt when you need him? :cheesy:

Exterior temp sensor is knackered, so the in-dash display reads "--".

That's it, really.

LOOOADS of problems

1) Clutch is nearly on the way out. Uncomfortable to use but at least its not slipping. Will do for another while

2) N/S back door needs a respray. Got a big ugly patch of paint there (long story).

3) Need a exterior temp gauge. But can't fix it because i won't be able to wire it to anything. No leccy mirrors.

4) Front bumper scratched at the bottom and the top. There is a small crack in it too.

5) HP fuel pump sometimes hunts really loud from a cold start. Although this seems to be getting better on its own.

6) CD player spits out cd's when i turn the car off. Maybe because I (somehow) threw a 10c coin inside it by accident one day. Couldn't be bothered taking it apart to fix it.

7) My 406 is a special edition. Its called the 406 RS. That stands for rattleship. The amount of rattles coming from both front doors is disgusting. Last week i had both doors cards off and still couldn't figure it out.

8 ) Drivers electric window goes down by itself sometimes. Very rarely though. Only needs a new switch.

9) ABS FAULT/BRAKING FAULT

10) Handbrake sticks. Worst handbrake ever. And i know its not just in my experience.

11) Power - I need more power. A good service this weekend might help a little bit.

The funny thing is that i know how to fix everything here but just haven't the time.

1 ) Needs a damn service

2 ) All locks need replacing after having ignition barrel changed

3 ) Slight squeak when i pull away, not sure what it is as cam belt has been on for 30k and crank shaft pulley done 2 months ago.

4 ) Gear sticks moves on acceleration and deceleration but only in 5th gear (Gearbox mount?)

5 ) Moisture in one rear light cluster and one fog light

6 ) Fault code of 'Clutch Actuator High', no idea on that one

7 ) CD Changer not working (no biggie, put in a Kenwood KOS-A200 to use USB sticks on OEM head unit)

8 ) Tracking seems out

9 ) Rust on bottom of rear door, looks like it had a bit af a ding before i had it, looking inside boot looks like rear wing was once replaced

I think that will do for now....

1 ) slight squeel from clutch on rare occasion, but it is the original on
110k so to be expected i guess.

2 ) drivers door trim ,the one that gets kicked off, need to fit the new
clips i bought .

3 ) and the worst thing, pimples in paint appearing on front edge of
bonnet, and i'm sure i remember in the past 2/3 other guy's on here
mentioning same problem and in exactly the same place but that is
going to be insurance job .

CJ if you take your steering column shrouds off and look down at the ignition barrel
you will see a single screw holding it in,good chance this has worked loose as mine did
which allowed it to move about and help in its failure

Hmm where to start.

1.) Speedo doesn't work. Have done the resoldering, so next is a trip to the local scrappy for magic box behind glovebox

2.)Tracking needs doing

3.)Spare tyre looked ok when I bought the car, but further inspection has shown it to be as flat as a pancake.

4.)Power steering reservoir leaks

5.)Need new protective trays for under bumper after 1.)

6.)What else can I ignore until it goes bang....

D8:
1) GRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! every time I turn the steering (further investigation on Saturday)

2) oil leaks

3) Back bumper is an odd shape (got too near a fire at some point) and the bootlid rubs on it.

4) Fag burns in the driver's seat, I don't smoke in it now but the damage is done (crappy cheap fags :x ) (next time one of you guys changes yours to leather rip the seat squab cover off and stick it in the post, it's JACOMO VELVET "EZ" pretty please with cherry on top :cheesy: )

5) oil leaks

6) rear brake back plates are rotten, I got the hubs cheap but I can't get the back plates and they're silly money from Pug.

7) no jack etc.

8 ) it's got the wrong wheels on it so I have to buy expensive tyres.

9) oil leaks

10) the dzus fasters that hold down the back carpet are missing, NLS by Pug.

11) Clip that holds the top of the timing belt cover to the engine top cover is missing (thank you Krešo  )

D9:

1) It's a D9 :?

2) tippity-tappety injectors.

3) small fag burn on driver's door card (SARATOGA VELOUR + "NZ" POINTIL ) - It was like that when I got it (honest - I've never smoked in it)

4) Paintwork's a bit crap.

miniman7 wrote:4.)Power steering reservoir leaks

From mjb's description of the assist spring this is what's holding it down, as for why..?
2) Relatively loose gear stick. Several times selected 4th rather than 2nd. Will need to check the linkages or the gear stick mount. Gear stick doesn't move with acceleration.
It won't do as it's cables. It's an exaust-off job to get the heatshield out the way to look at the bottom of the stick, I can see you getting used to it...
4) Second part of the undertray has dislodged itself and had to be removed. Will need to zip-tie that back on.
Or leave it off - neither of mine left the factory with one.
5) Tracking crap - keeps veering to the left and to go straight, the steering wheel needs to be turning slightly to the right. Paid £82.80 to have tracking done on Tuesday and, although, they said tracking was out by 1.2 degrees on some wheels, the problem is still there. (tossers)
What are the tyres like? I once had some real issues that went when I changed the tyres, they were odd but I thought the treads were similar enough not to give that amount of pull

external temp sensor no worky
remote central locking no worky
the aircon button does not light up
there is a rattle from inside the rear driver side door on idle
the timing belt has snapped

thats the problems in reverse order that i'm planning to fix them, lol.

(on the plus side the rattle at idle does not bother me while the car is not working the moment, weird that)

Hi C.J. :D I've had a very busy and aggravating day, had to take off an exhaust on a Corsa that Quick Fit had fitted and fit it properly, for a disabled customer, he didn't want to take it back cause he isn't very well, (I try to avoid doing exhausts for people, too much aggro).I serviced and took it for mot as well.
Had a Citroen C3 with a banging coming from the rear brakes (the linings had broken off the shoes (common Citroen/Renault fault).Brake cylinders were leaking slightly, so I replaced them too, had to search all over town to get some. Then had 10 minutes for a cup of tea and a sandwhich, then had to take my son to the college for interviews.Well, you did ask :D

Clutch....dunno, could be either of those listed.

Gearchange....yeah, linkages worn, bushes etc.

I usually fit new nuts and bolts to the undertray, use some large washers, about an inch diameter with small holes for the new 6mm bolts.

I agree about the tyres, changing them round back to front and front to back usually makes a difference, or shifting them right to left/left to right, I have a minor problem with my van, i'm going to shift the tyres about when I get time.

Loose barrel....the only one I've ever done on a 406 was the same as a Citroen, you turn the key to position 2 then press a small plunger in to release the barrel, don't know how to stop it from being loose, maybe, like someone else suggests, you have a loose screw in it. Yours may well be different to the one I did.
BTW, I have a brand new ignition barrel lying about with the key missing.

My car has a rattle from the N/s front door and the plastic engine cover has two broken rubber mountings, I will fix these on the service in a couple of weeks.
Oh, and the fuel flap problem.

All the best.

1. Suspect head gasket, mayo all over oil filler cap. Need to flush oil & replace to eliminate contamination first ...
2. Oil leak
3. Still got a small coolant leak around the header tank; suspect pipe coming off the bottom, easy fix
4. Replace handbrake cables cos they're fecked
5. Aircon regas
