It's not a pile of crap, it's just got a load of small issues and a couple of big expensive ones.

HOLYCRAP I've just seen how much a new PAS pump costs... £260! and if it's the rack... The sodding car's worth less than a new one! Definitely breakers yard time.

Quite often this mayo stuff is only condensation from using the car on shorter journeys, ie, water mixing with oil on the filler cap.Usually with head gasket, you have mayo stuff all the way up your dipstick combined with severe water loss, ie, water getting into the oil and raising the oil level.

Thanks Jasper, I was hoping that was the case! There's no trace of mayo on the dipstick at all and the coolant level is staying constant apart from that small leak from the header tank.
I need to remove the oil filler and give it a damn good clean when I flush the oil, there's so much gunge in that meshy bit that the oil just pools there rather than flowing into the engine!

Just electrical gremlins mostly caused by the BSi, nothing major

Not much really considering.
Car1 A bit of rust on the tailgate at the edge of the No. plate recess & the speedo sometimes stops wokig for a rew seconds

Car2 A nasty scrape on the back wing where someone in a 4x4 with lamp guards restyled it. A broken chrome fillet strip in the front bumper where I clipper a deer going to work at 4.30am one day. The side airbag light comes on if someone moves the seat, but then goes off again after a few days. The leather interior is filthy, Imeant to clean it last summer but never got round to it.

Car3 Sounds like it may have a wheel bearing on the way out. A nasty dent in the N/S/R door where it was "car parked".

Car4 No faults at the moment but living in fear of the brake fault reoccurring. Only happened once but the brake pedal went absolutely solid, like it was welded in place, no movement whatsoever. Got it recovered home by RAC, who couldn't suggest a cause, but as it was unloaded of the wagon the fault had gone & has never happened again.

Car5 Having a bit of a flat battery issue at the moment, goes flat every week or 10 days despite a new battery & charging system check, but then it never gets a decent run either.

Car6 Knocking noise from the N/S/F anti roll bar link, easy to fix & I've got the part, £8.

Car7 Just had 2 new tyres & tracking so apart from sounding like a tractor on cold startup (1.9XUD) its fine.

Thats it, not bad eh? Oh I nearly forgot, ALL the cars except car2 have a common fault, yes thats right, A NUT LOOSE BEHIND THE WHEEL.

CJ if you take your steering column shrouds off and look down at the ignition barrel
you will see a single screw holding it in,good chance this has worked loose as mine did
which allowed it to move about and help in its failure

Hmm, I took off the column plastics but couldn't see any screws holding it. Just a little catch thing on top. I took off the plastic bit with the transmitted thing as well but couldn't see anything. Maybe the screw has gone completely? Where would it be exactly (pic? )

I am finding it strange to settle into another car - if I hop back into the 406 it feels like a comfy old shoe, familiar and welcome

Anyway it needs selling to help wth the £280.00 for 2 new tyres on the Volvo

The pleasures of owning a newer car I could get 4 tyres for my 406 and still have £80.00 change .


I remember sometime ago welly you convinced me to keep the 406 as it owes me nothing all I pay for is repairs well getting on close to 200k its a pleasure no problems at all Im actually saving money thanks Welly
