Another clunk from the front end question.

Post by GSB »

I changed the droplinks about 6mths ago on my 2.1td, for some while there has been a light clunk upon gentle acceleration/ deceleration at low speeds. When I had the timing belt changed (beyond my basic skills :( ) just before xmas I asked the garage to check out the problem, he could not find the reason. This has now started to get more noticeable and also there is now a clunk when starting the engine. I had the wheels off at the weekend but could not find the likely culprit. I'm sure it's all from the offside. Engine mountings? or anything else more likely. The cars done 205m so I expect everything is pretty well worn. Thanks

I'd suggest the engine mounts. The pear-shaped part of the top mount located behind the ECU box seems the most frequently failing part and is relatively easy and cheap to replace
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

I second that, my D8 was suffering the exact same noise in the same conditions, growing gradually worse. Definately the top left mount, an easy job
I call her Starbug 1, because she's green with intergalactic milage!! I do love my D8 diesel.

Had to order in the mounting today, Haynes :x also says 'undo the four bolts securing the movement limiter mounting bracket to the body' Pug call it the 'Hook Anticouple' my local part dept suggested renewing that as well. I can see two bolts, the picture of it shows three, not sure how to get at 3rd. Do you need to be triple jointed ?

It is do-able, you need a small socket wrench to get in there.
