Re: newbie here
Welcome to the madhouse!
I've never driven a diesel 406, but I'm totally loving the 1.8 petrol.
Mine is a Phase 2 model, saloon configuration, you'll see them referred to here as D9 models, or Facelift models - so I have the 1.8l 16-valve fuel-injected engine that produces 115 HP.
It doesn't look like a sporty car, but it certainly feels quite aggressive; it accelerates nicely, and the engine doesn't half give a lovely growl as you step on the gas. There are also 2 litre, 2 litre turbo, 2.2 litre, and 3.0 litre V6 petrol engine versions available as well, though I can imagine them being a bit more to insure than either of the engine types you mentioned.
Hope you have fun picking out a 406, and that you get a good one with low mileage.

Sod low mileage, these things LOVE miles!
Anything under 150k is "young", under 100k is "pre-pubescent"

Welcome Owik!
I had a D8 1.8 16v and to be honest it was totally gutless. They did improve the D9 version but if you're going petrol I'd get the 2L 16v

Re: newbie here
Dunno about the D8, but I like the D9 well enough (the D9 got the EW7 engine, the D8 had the XU7). There's a few horsepower difference in it - not a lot, but the EW7 is a slightly more powerful engine.teamster1975 wrote:Welcome Owik!![]()

I wouldn't call mine gutless, though I suppose it depends what you're comparing it to. If you'd just got into it after having gotten out of a Bugatti Veyron, then I guess ...

Re: newbie here
I'd go for the diesel! It won't be an Hdi though, just a standard turbo diesel. Double check though, they didn't introduce the Hdi until the D9's.
Make sure you check any service history they've got, cam belt change etc
Good luck!

Re: newbie here
Estates are heavier than saloons so I'd recommend avoiding the lowest power versions whether you go for petrol or diesel.
Be tempted to look on 2L petrol / 2.1TD or Hdi 110 as the least oomph required, but it's a personal opinion.

Re: newbie here
not really fussed about the weight, what im doin is a support/recovery car but will be doing it up smart hopefully. just needs to tow if anything. ive already got the wheels for it but will need a body kit eventually. i think the bloke did say it was a 2.0 ltr turbo so it wont be the hdi come to think about it teamster
but i wondered if it look good enough id be able to take it to the car shows n stuff!
