Re: 2.1 head problems
not much evidence to support that either one is more or less reliable than the other that i have seen.
the 2.1 does however use a different fuel pump to the 1.9 which hinders the ol chip fat use, but apart from that i'd say the 2.1 was a terrific engine. only issues i've had with mine was a snapped timning belt, and that was because i neglected to change it when needed.
i'd say they both good, but the extra power in the 2.1 is fantastic.

Re: 2.1 head problems
I have contacted the guy and based his info on the fact that when searching the net he found several posts on 2.1 head problems and only one on the 1.9, but from what I know the 1.9 suffers with head gasket problems and that's what i've been told be pug spaner men who also said the 2.1 was very reliable.
And yes the Lucas doesn't like chip oil but I'll be giveing it another go on my home brew biodiesel soon.
On reflection I think he may of found more info on the 2.1 as theres not that many of them and people dont know as much about them so have to ask.

Re: 2.1 head problems
I'm pretty sure most of the 406 high-milers (over 300k miles) I've heard about have nearly all been 2.1TDs. I know the last one I saw over 500k was

Re: 2.1 head problems
simple things cause problems, fans packing up lead to overheating which will lead to head gasket failure, then people get the repair done on the cheap using non genuine parts. I bought my 2.1 with head gasket just been done at 103K miles only for it to go again 3K miles later. Doing the job myself i found a cheap nasty head gasket in there, did the job properly and it did another trouble free 100K miles in just over a year before it decided to have a drink from a deep puddle and even then somehow managed to sort itself out and do another 3K miles (never seen a diesel engine survive water
) the only side effect has been a bit of a miss fire every so often, overall its been a cracking engine, doing a gps top speed 130 and generally worrying more powerful motors
