Odd knocking when braking

Post by Captain Jack »

Hi guys,

Today I have a sudden new problem. When braking hard-ish, I am getting a knock from around the driver front door area. I had a look under my car and see if the exhaust or anything is loose but everything looks OK. I can actually feel the clunk in the door if I put my hand on it but can't locate the source. Sounds like it's coming from inside the door somewhere but I can't be sure.

The car otherwise drives fine.

Any ideas? :?

Take the door card off and have a look?
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Do you get a shudder through the brake pedal when this knock occurs? If not, I don't think it's connected with the ABS, a shudder and a knocking from the brake pedal is the ABS doing its job.

You may have a worn door hinge or a worn door check strap. Take hold of the door and try to lift it up and down, does it knock or clunk then? This would show up a worn hinge.

Is it a one off clunk each time you brake(possible suspension problem) or does it repeat as the wheels go round possible cracked disc)?

It's definitely not related to braking. I know what ABS judder is like and this nothing like it. There's no judder of any kind and the car works as normal. It really does sound like something is loose inside the door (or, as some said, door hinge) but I guess it could be suspension as well. Although, there are no knocks when going over bumps... Will take the speaker out today and have a look inside the door. Hope it's nothing serious!

Well, I took the speaker out of the door (what a puny speaker!) and didn't find anything out of the ordinary. So, I took it for a drive and the banging was gone :? Oh well, got 150 mile trip this evening so we'll see if anything shows up on the radar.

Urgh! It's still there... but only sometimes. Today was slowing down from 70 to about 40 fairly firmly and the knock was there again. It sounds like it's coming from the seat belt tensioner area, or maybe under/inside the sill things. Can't think what though.

Will have a look at the seat belt tensioner one day and see if there's anything there doing the knocking.

Xsaras are prone to noises of this kind from the rear dampers - you can't find anything amiss by any normal test, but they give a rhythmic knock, the frequency and severity increase the harder you brake. Never makes a noise any other time.

The thing is, it's very hard to reproduce. Doesn't normally matter how hard I brake and there are no noises. But sometimes, you do get it. I am covering over 100 miles daily and had this just twice today for the first time in a week.

Right, yesterday, my wife informed me of a knocking noise on the drivers side when braking hard, I drove the car and the noise was there, very loud and sounded like a thudding noise, It is definitely related to the brakes.I have checked them out, but can't find any fault, she tells me the noise has been there on and off for a short while, she didn't tell me cause it keeps going away.

My 406 is booked in for mot saturday morning, I will have a really good look round whilst I have it in the mot garage, Steve, my mot guy, will let me have a look and will look with me.

Interesting. The front brake pads/discs have been replaced 3000 miles ago when I bought the car (have I done that much already? :|) so I don't expect these to be the culprit. Could be the rears but don't know the state of them. Will take the wheel off and see if there's anything obvious (but if you can't find anything, I won't either!).

My bangs aren't very loud - i.e. quieter than the noise the seat belt makes when you pull it hard but does come from the same area.

Gotta go pee in a bottle now....

My friends Opel Omega-B had a similar problem... problem lied on the alloys he was using.
The counter weights that were put on the inside of the rim went against the brake caliper...

Is it possible that the caliper moves slightly and tilts just that much that it will touch the counter weights on the alloy? The space petween the caliper and the weights was 1mm. Amazingly close :)
