Thank God it's not a Vauxhall!

Post by mjb »

This evening I helped out one of the guys at work whose 2005 (ish, i think) Corsa was dripping petrol when the engine was on, and then for some time after.

A quick look underneath showed his fuel filter had rusted through. It looked worse than my brake backplates! The hose clips are awful too and couldn't be pressed in due to the rust, so I ended up levering the plastic parts out and ripping them off with pliers as the plastic parts come with the Halfords replacement.

It's a shocking day when a Halfords fuel filter is VASTLY better quality than an OEM part  It's actually galvanised!

My mate had a Barina (Corsa) - Was a 2003 model!

They have 60,000km timing belt intervals - plenty of them snap prematurely! Warped discs - can't stand the Australian temperatures and heaps of them have really bad faded paint - again, not really designed for UV conditions down under! Still, they sell like hotcakes!

Would much rather have a 206/Clio/Yaris - Better built cars

I had to replace the fuel filter on her indoors '53' reg Astra as that was weeping ever so slightly too

Well I say "I" replaced it........ :|

Bit of a daft place to put it underneath where it gets sprayed in salt water all winter

Nah, it's the best place for it - better than dropping out the fuel tank or having it enter and exit the body... Galvanised filters have no problems, you don't see many brown street lamps do you? You can pull off a decent filter after years of abuse and it'll still look like it's only been on a week, but these Corsa ones... Most unimpressive, it was literally flaking apart. Reckon if I'd have grabbed it too tight I'd have broken it in 2

But the really shocking thing is that the Halfrauds version was far superior

Ladies and gentlemen, I regret to inform you that Hell has closed for de-icing...

I thought it would be better up in the engine bay. Is that where the 406 petrol's is?

Your question is ambiguous  Is "that" referring to the engine bay or the location on the Corsa? :P

Petrol 406s have the fuel filter (if fitted) on the drivers side just in front of the rear wheel arch - same as the Corsa

I didn't know the 406 was the same, the Diesel filter is up front.

Diesel won't create an explosive atmosphere if it leaks in the engine bay, unlike petrol which could also ignite on hitting a hot engine

i had the same problem last year on my 406.............couldnt work out where the fuel was leaking from until i had the bright idea of starting car up and looking .........low and behold one leaking pile of rust that used to be called a fuel filter looking like a pile of damp rust about to explode with the vibration of a running engine and shedding 1 ton of rust into the fuel towards the engine lmao

talking to my local friendly parts man though.........he says most fuel filters and exhausts actually rust from the inside out as there is more prolonged contact with water and other coroding chemicals than there is on the outside...........so there lol

end result was £10.00 lighter and a petro sodden hand and pliers getting peugeots stupid own design clips off GRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!! lol

It should never be full of anything other than petrol, which doesn't corrode corrode your fuel tank, fuel pipes or engine...

The pug ones are a pain, but they're better than the GM ones I ended up removing by levering the clips out and ripping them off with a pair of pliers. I was worrying that I'd snap the metal part of the clip attached to the fuel line (which would obviously cause the whole pipe to need replacing). The pug ones can happily take abuse though

I did like the Corsa's metal clip holding it in though. Bit more sturdy than the zip ties pug use
