Cam belt tomorrow

Post by keys84 »

Would be helpful if people could give any suggestions of anything ive forgotten

I have the
water pump
new gasket for pump (do i need to gasket sealant this)
cam belt/ tensioner and pulley (aux belt recently done)
bolts to lock engine (6, 8, 10)three of each
basic tools, sockets, spanners, hex and star keys
-no tensioning tool-

Any thoughts would be appreciated
off to euro parts in the mornin for fan switch and themostat as she's slightly warm
could this be the water pump finally given up? hope nothing more serious than that.

Bit of wood (to go between the jack and sump) if you're taking the engine mount off
New pear-shaped bit of the top engine mount (may as well do it now - they should be considered consumables on 406s)
Coolant
Possibly a big breaker bar for the crankshaft pulley
BIG HAMMER - "if it don't wanna go - 'it it until it does"
Prayer mat
Kleenex for crying into after you've put the BIG HAMMER through the wing in frustration
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Some tipex or white paint to mark where your pulleys are lined up, I know you have the locking bolts (which engine is it?), but I always mark the position of the pulleys.

You need a tool for locking the crank, a cranked piece of round bar to go through the hole under the starter motor (someone once suggested a bar off a paint roller as a stop gap), that was a good idea.
If yours has the automatic aux belt tensioner, I would have a small allen key or small punch to fit in the hole locking the tensioner back so that you can remove the belt and refit it easily.

Antifreeze.

Have a good read up on the method for doing this job, the method of locking the crank is different to the diesels, you have to use a plate to lock the flywheel and the tensioner works in a different way.

If you haven't got a crank locking tool, make sure that you mark the crank pulley for the timing belt so that if it moves you can set it back to where it should be, (hence my initial advice to mark all the pulleys).

You should use some silicon sealant on the water pump.
