Instrument Cluster/Buzzer

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Instrument Cluster/Buzzer

Post by johnny406 »

I've looked in the Haynes manual and it confirms my thoughts. There should be a lights on buzzer.

I keep leaving the freckin' lights on in my 406 it's a D8 1997 model first registered in 1998 although the build dates says it was built toward the end of 96' there doesn't seem to be any warning when taking the key out of the ignition or opening the door when the lights are on even though there is a buzzer in the circuit diagrams :( Any help it would be useful to prevent me from eventually killing the battery.

Also why are there so many bulbs on the instrument cluster which have no bulbs in or don't work.

If the sunshines or you shine a light on them you can identify them all.

The ones that obviously work are the
ABS light
Stop Light
Oil Light
Hand/Brake Light

But there are so many bulbs which could be useful but don't light

Seatbelt reminder
What looks like another seatbelt reminder for the back with two people on it with belts across them
ASC - Useless as I haven't got traction Control.
A Shock absorber symbol - useless as I haven't got electronic suspension.
And Others.

Do the seatbelt reminders work as standard do they just need bulbs, pretty stupid not having them working.

It's a GLX too pretty crap spec had to put Alloys on it, No A/C but a Sunroof rather have the cold recirulated air.

The buzzer is located on the instrument cluster pcb. It may have gone faulty or there's a bad connection in the stalk.
They used the same cluster for the GLX spec upwards, so you will find several non functioning lights!

Unless I'm mistaken, that's not a GLX then. I'm fairly sure GLXs came with alloys and climate control as standard, just lacking the leather seats and cruise control (on engines that support it) of the execs

The instrument clusters are the same across a lot of the range to keep prices down. Why go to the expense and overhead of separate clusters for L, LX, GLX, Exec, etc in all the combinations of engines (the rev counters and speedos are different) when they can just make a few models and leave lights out?

I think the climate control was still only an option on the GLX; they did all come with alloys though.

Thanks teamster, it's definately a GLX.

It's a 1996 model year one hence no alloys or A/C

you can even see the GLX where I took the badge off and it's stained the paintwork.

Plus it has rear electric windows and foglights.

Anyway is it definately the PCB did all 406's have lights on warning?

I would say so, my '96 LX certainly did. Either the cluster or the stalk gone dicky (or a break in the wiring!)
TBH I don't think I've ever heard of that particular fault, might be worth digging out a multimeter to see if there's any voltage across the buzzer when the side lights are on. You would have to strip the cluster apart to get to the back of the PCB though.
