One f*ck-off big engine

Post by swiss »

While I'm waiting for me render to, um render...

Ladies and gentlemen, I present for your consideration the Wartsila-Sulzer RTA96-C slow-speed two stroke:
  • Available in 6 to 14 cylinder straight configurations
14-cylinder flavour weighs in a 2300 tonnes and is five decks high
Said 14-cylinder engine outputs up to 84.42 MW / 114,800 bhp
    960 mm / 37.79 inch bore, 2500 mm / 98.42 inch stroke
And if that doesn't quite communicate how unspeakably large this thing is:

You can just about make out the guys working around it:

Installing the crank bearings:

And the shaft itself:

The cylinder head 'deck' - yes, those studs are twice the height of the guy installing them ^_^

Let the  commence :cheesy:

Fraid not Puggy, it's a direct drive :) It does between 92 and 102rpm, and you'd need to fit a controllable pitch propeller to yer motor :cheesy:

Typically helical scroll pumps, one per cylinder driven from the cam shaft. Though Wartsila, being Finnish, often use a really weird design invented by some Finnish engineer chappy. Have a looky here.

Four-stroke is typically more efficient in small, fast engines. Can't remember why exactly, but you usually only go for the two-stroke crosshead when it's at 120rpm or below and the size of a house or bigger ^^

I do like the electric super charger idea though ^^

No, nothing so offensively large. The particular example in the first picture is installed aboard Emma Maersk, the largest container ship ever built when she was launched in 2006 (and still the world's longest in 2008).

Most of the ships in our fleet are either very old or very new. The older ones mostly use twin medium-speed four-strokes, similar to those I posted photos of a while ago. Only two use slow-speed two-strokes, and they're not nearly as big. The newer builds are diesel-electric. The Bays (I was on Mounts Bay in 2007) have four four-stroke 900rpm Wartsila jennies. They spit out 6.6kV, routed through converters to two very, very large electric motors.

Straight Eight aboard Mounts Bay:

This is what a Bay boat looks like in dry dock:

The hole with the grill is the bow thruster tunnel. 'Tis a biggun:

Also, please don't show this thread to the Russians ^_^

Lots of molten metal (probably have to have it melting as it's being poured) and a very big mould I reckon. Now, the crankshaft... how on earth...
