AUX belt 1.9td

Post by redfar »

I need some help about replacing the aux belt for the 406 1.9td.I noticed that the belt has some loose especially when it's at idle. When it's at idle the belt is a bit loose from the crank to the A/C.
Can some one give me some tips how to do the job because it's my first time and if I need some special tools.

Picky up a Haynes manual from your local Halfrauds or Ebay

Does your belt have a guide roller between the aircon and crank pulleys?

If yours does NOT, then you need a 15mm spanner (as long as you can get) and a small allen key or a small punch or something to place in the hole for the tensioner when you turn it to its limit.Look at the tensioner first to locate a small hole in the outer part and a small hole in the inner part of the aluminium tensioner block.

Before you strip off the old belt, draw the pulleys on a piece of paper and draw round the pulleys to see how the belt is fitted (in case you can't remember how the belt fitted before you removed it).Just draw a few circles to represent the pulleys and write in them which pulley they are.
Observe all safety precautions....then...
Get your 15mm spanner and your allen key or punch, place the spanner on the nut at the tensior pulley and turn the spanner away from the belt thus moving the tensioner away from the belt, line up the holes in the tensioner block and fit the allen key or punch in the small hole, this will lock the tensioner away from the belt.

Remove the belt and check all the pulleys, especially the tensioner pulley, spin it round to feel any roughness in the bearing, if you are in any doubt as to its condition, replace it.

To fit the belt...having noted the position of the belt, wind the belt around the pulleys, check it is sat in all the grooves correctly, then get your spanner and turn the tensioner a little until you can safely remove the allen key or punch, check that the belt is on properly over all the pulleys, start up and check all is well.

Hi jasper5 thanks for your reply,
Mine have 5 pulleys, powersteering, alternator, tensioner, roller(I think)AC,and alternator.I can't notice any bolts that I can reach with a spanner but the tensioner has a hole in it and it fits a torx in it.I don't try moving the torx just put it in there, but I think if I rotate the torx the tensioner will loose.

Hi redfar, your setup sounds like the same as the 206.

I forgot to mention earlier, check that the new belt is the same size as your old one, it will have numbers and letters such as 6PK 1250...that's not your belt size, I used that as an example.

Where the torx bit is, does it have a large nut, with the torx bit in the middle?

If this is your type, follow what I said about drawing where the belt goes around the pulleys, then undo the torx bit, the big nut is what you use to tension the belt, turning it will tension or slacken the belt.

When you fit the new belt around the pulleys, lightly tighten the torx bit and turn the big nut until the belt is very tight on the pulleys, check it at the bottom between the aircon and the crank pulley, then lock up the torx bit.

There are a few different types of belt/tensioner arrangement fitted on these, if this one is wrong let me know.

hi whatever ya do dont over tension it - some prat did mine , tensioned it too much and it ripped the air con compressor of the sump, cracked the sump and F****d my drive up with oil and cost me 120 quid to have the sump welded and another new belt and a roastin off the wife about the drive!

Hi Thanks all for your reply,I found a pic how is my tensioner Image

The reason why I would like to take the belt off is because I have a rattle noise coming from the belt from the AC compressor to the crank. When the engine is at idle and I turn the steering or switch the AC or switch on the bright the belt start rattle from the AC compressor to the crank,it doesn't stay straight.I check the belt for any loose but the belt is tight but I am suspecting there is something wrong with it.
Is there suppose to be another pulley between the AC and the crack?because I found a pic of a 19td engine but from a 405 and there is another pulley in between to hold the belt and mine doesn't have.
The problem is where there's the circle but mine doesn't have that pulley. The engine more or less looks like mine but this is from a 405.

On the engine in the picture, the tensioner is the big pulley at the bottom, there are two 6mm allen bolts that lock the tensioner with another underneath that adjusts the tension (in the middle of the red circle).

Undo the two allen bolts and screw the tensioner away from the belt, using the bottom allen screw.Fit your new belt and adjust it by screwing the bottom allen bolt until the belt is tight, then tighten the two other allen bolts.

My engine is not like the engine in the pic but similiar.I upload a picture of a tensioner like mine and that I would like to know how I take the belt off.If I remove the torx that there is in the middle of the wheel what will happen?Or I have to loose the big bolt?

If the torx screw is inside the big nut, you have to undo the torx screw, then move the big nut until the belt will come off.

When you refit the belt, turn the big nut until the belt is tight then tighten up the torx screw, it helps if you tighten the torx screw a bit before moving the big nut to tension the belt.

A picture would be useful.
