What would be the sound of a knackered inner CV joint??!!

Post by ed209 »

My 240k D8 1.9td has developed what I can only described as a graunchy vibration noise which appears to be coming from down low on the nearside front! :!:

I first though diff, my mechanic thought the same, so I had a replacement gearbox (off a 96k scrapper) fitted.

The graunchy vibration noise persists, my mechanic thinks engine mount vibration, and i'm thinking inner CV joint! We have ruled out the replacement gearbox at fault (for now).
On the open road the noise is not evident, it can be heard more at slow speeds, especially when going slowly up hills.

Anyone have any ideas, I can't stand the graunch anymore!!

Engine mounts are dirt cheap - the usual suspect is the pear-shaped one on the offside top (handily the cheapest at about £20), although everyone (myself included in the past) mis-diagnoses and blames the other parts
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Thanks, but that part was replaced not so long ago.

Any other ideas greatly appreciated.

It could be the lower engine mounts. More expensive to replace.

A faulty CV joint goes 'knock knock knock' when the car is turning

I have never done the right hand side mount, are they a pain to change?

I have never heard a faulty inner CV joint, do you get the same knock knock as a failing outer joint?

The inner CV joint will usually vibrate driving in a straight line and possibly clunk, the best thing to check it out is to raise the car at the nearside onto axle stands, taking all safety precautions, run the engine with it in gear, you will soon notice any problems.

Also get hold of the wheel with it in gear (engine off) and move the wheel backwards and forwards, wear will be apparent.
