cigar lighter

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

cigar lighter

1998 d8 1.9 td

hi all can anyone help - my lighter socket isn't working(not sure if it was when i bought the car actually but i never really use one) and i now need one for my sat nav as it's only a 2 hour battery.

Anyway i've checked the obvious - fuse, wiring up to lighter socket etc and all seems ok in that dept and tested the socket with two different plug ins - sat nav and i pod but get no power.

Does anyone know how to repair or which unit to replace this with? if it's any help its the one to the left of the handbrake in the centre console.

Many thanks

Neil

Assuming you had the engine running/ignition in the second on position when tested?

Does the wire running to the socket have 12V?

Most likely a damaged socket or loose connection - worth pulling it out & having a look.
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Not sure, stick the negative on the door catch pin, and try the positive in both. One of them at least should be giving you 12V, and if neither are, then your problem lies further up the chain, i.e. fuse, etc.

socket's crap, you can get another from the dealers for about £15. Take the old one out by twisting the metal inner bit anticlockwise then pulling up. Unclip the power connector then you can remove the outer orange plastic bit

THANK YOU!! I had the whole console out a couple of times trying to sort out the light socket and ended up breaking the orange surround because i couldn't remove it. I feel a bit stupid now but happy that i should be able to sort it

I wrote a nice little howto on it before the unfortunate forum hacking accident a couple of years back because it took me AGES to work out how to do it

Have to see if I can dig up the pics again
