406 2001 110HDI Temp Gauge

Post by Rog21 »

Hi,

I've got a problem with the Temp gauge on the dash, it looks like it may be the temp sender but
I am confused about its location.

the Haynes manual says its got a single blue wire into it,
The only bits I can find is a sensor on the end of the engine above the gear box near the thermostat housing
which has two wires which i assume is the sensor for the ECU, are these the same one and if so if this was faulty the engine wouldn't run correctly.
The car runs fine
Has the 406 got two temp senders one for ECU and one for Gauge ?
if so where is the gauge sensor !

Don't know about the hdi110, but a lot of 406s have 2 coolant temperature sensors - one for the dash and another for the ECU. They're usually located next to each other
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

My 110 HDi has just the one as far as I know - mounted by a spring clip into the thermostat housing. I replaced it recently because dashboard gauge was fluctuating up and down. Didn't drain down the coolant - just had the wife keep topping up the header tank whilst I changed it over. Very easy job and fixed the gauge problem.

Thanks for that, I'll give up looking for a second sensor and
replace the one I've found which sounds like the one you replaced.
Useful tip about the wife !

I'd send her round with the anti-freeze but she's gone shopping...
Probably a good idea to hose down all the spilled glycol after you're done. Also when you buy the new sensor you should ask for the o-ring as well. False economy not to change it.

Changed temp sender still no luck,

Does anyone know if the temp gauge actually runs from ECU as there is only one sender ?

Can I reset faults on system without a diagnostic device or main dealer, i.e by disconnecting battery ?

My temp sender is located above the gearbox, behind the air filter box, fitted into the passengers side of the cylinder head.

It has a GREEN connector, held in by a spring clip.

Temp gauge now started working after a drive in very wet conditions yesterday morning, don't understand
but air conditioning has also now started working. I think there must be a connection with the sensor and the A/C
control unit.
If anyone has any thoughts I would be interested to hear. I didn't think any wiring was exposed to the
spray from the road as the bottom of the engine is enclosed by cover.
