Rear Brakes

Hi all,

Recently changed the pads, discs and shoes on the rear of my D9 estate. For the past fortnight or so been having a clunking sound from the rear left if I gently apply the brakes, no noise if fully applied!! The noise is there all the time I gently apply the brakes.

Does any one have any suggestions as to the cause of the noise??

Did you use copper slip/grease when refitting, as this makes sure free movement/sliding of pads. They could be sticking after being applied.

Might be worth jacking that corner up and turning the wheel by hand to check for noise.

Yeah used loads of copper grease!!

Did the pads fit in as a nice sliding fit, or was there any up and down movement, ie, did the pads seem a little too small for their slots?

Were the clips and pins fitted tight so that there was tension on the pads from the spring clips?

This would give you a clunk as the pads would move up and down in their slots as the brake is applied.

If all seems well with the pads, jack up the car and check for any side to side or up and down movement in the wheel, there could be play in a suspension bush or link rod, allowing the wheel to move forward or backwards under braking.
