immobiliser symbol.

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

immobiliser symbol.

Post by smee1 »

Hi Newbie here,

I am just wondering if some of you learned people would be kind enough to advise me on the following. I bought a 52 plate 406 hdi 90 hoping for some economical motoring in these difficult times and the car seems to have developed a starting problem which is intermittent and always throws up the "key" symbol in red on the dash. If I leave it for a minute then try again as soon as the motor turns over with no key symbol the car starts. I have browsed some of the info on this forum and understand it is an immobiliser problem. Has anyone had experience of this and if so could they advise me on what causes the problem and how to overcome it. The car is not affected in any other way and runs well. It has happened three times now this week and is a bit of a worry.

Many thanks in anticipation.

I have the same problem. From what I can tell from the interweb, it's either caused by a weak battery or a dodgy transceiver aerial around the ignition barrel
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Many thanks for your kind reply, I saw another post confirming the transponder ariel in the ignition barrel. How long has your car been like this and also do you know where I would be able to purchase one (ariel). If it is not imperative to change I would leave it a while, its' a comfort to know what it is as you here so many stories about dodgy immobilisers and "BSI" units in these cars I was scared I had bought a pig in a poke. Appreciate your time.
