Comparison sites are useless

Post by Captain Jack »

So, my insurance is up for renewal next month and I decided to try my luck on those heavily advertised comparison sites (meerkats et al). Since I am a relatively risky owner (2 speeding convictions + 1 accident - 3 NCB), I was expecting to pay around £500 for my insurance. And sure enough, comparethemeerkats quoted me £588 for the cheapest one, while gocompare quoted around £421(!) for the cheapest one. Then I went on to moneysupermarket and tried my luck there. Cheapest one there was £440 from Alliance. I wonder why from different comparison sites give different quotes from the same insurers?

"Hmm", I thought. So then, I went on to Alliance's site and entered my details - was quoted £404! That's nearly 200 quid difference! I wonder how much I would save looking at all these insurers individually.... :?

Couldn't agree with you more - you seem to get better results ringing round the old-fashioned way. I haven't got the patience for it so usually get Mrs Doggy to sort it. Best result was about 6yrs ago, she got a quote for about £250 from Asda for my 3.0 Omega, over £100 less than previously. Great, I thought & got her to sort it, when the paperwork came through it said, 'Omega 8V'! Sod it Ithought, guess I'll have to cancel and start again
Then I thought again - checked she had used the info I'd provided, (engine size, etc), so got her to ring up & demand insurance for the 3.0 at the proce quoted. "We'll review the recording of the phone conversation & let you know", said man in charge. Sure enough, they had cocked up & so honoured the contract :cheesy:

Just goes to show what can be acheived when two individuals, with no idea what they're talking about, negotiate a deal for you.
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Thank you for correcting me.

You're probably not old enough yet to use Privilege  Mrs Welly uses them but strangely they were cheaper than Direct Line even though they're part of the same group

Quinn Direct are cheap I know.

I've found that comparison sites tend to make assumptions in my favour, which often result in lower quotes than if I go direct... This year gocompare.com trumped everything else by a considerable margin

What I usually do is try the main comparison sites, then of the few best quotes I'll try a direct quote to see how that fares up. There's no way I can be bothered to put my details into 100 or so sites though
