dash stop light - oil and brake lights too

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

I presume you're not talking about the first few seconds after you turn the key? Does the engine show any symptoms - even for a split second - before this happens? I'm wondering if your ignition barrel's a bit iffy and causing a short cut-out which'll throw those lights up, just like you see when you start the car
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

yeah that could well be the case
ive recently just had the starter solenoid go
so could be.....but....
wouldn't i also see the engine management light
or is that a different circuit/system???
there is also one other that comes on at start but not with the fault
but at this time of night the word escapes me
