Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Radiator Cooling Fan

Post by Tubsie »

Hi all

I have aproblem with my 406 HDI radiator cooling fan it doesnt run. I have checked and changed the 3 relays behind the grille but this hasnt changed anything. when I short out the blue relay th fan spins up to full speed and on the green one's it runs at slower speeds. I dont appear to have any voltage at the 2 stats (rheostats). I'm an electrician but dont have a wiring diagram to see what brings the coils of the relays on I was assuming it would be the stats (rheostats) on the rad housing but they only go through the relays but not bring the coils on.

Hopefully someone will be able to point me in the right direction.

Cheers

You really need the Haynes, (or better) diagram & be able to refer to the car to make sense of it, but the gist of it is:
Relays controlled directly by engine ECU, but can also be overriden by the 'pressostat', which I assume means the aircon HP/LP switch. No point listing fuse details as yours are clearly OK.

ECU problems seem to be rare - I suggest checking out the coolant temperature sensor first. I've heard there are two, (one for the temp gauge and the one you want for the ECU - should have a green 2-pin connector, wire no.s 4000(yellow) & 401(white).

Not sure that much but...this 40A fuse marked with paint had to be replaced on my HDi 110 cos the fan motor was drawing too much current......

And here's a thread about th fan relays/resisters if t will help.....
