Clay barring is cool!!

Discuss the 406's Bodywork stuff in here (what parts fit what, what can be interchanged with what etc etc).

Clay barring is cool!!

Post by Welly »

I'd heard of clay barring but it sounds a right old job doesn't it? but I have been unhappy with the 'rough' feel of the Volvo's paint after washing it and I could feel tiny little specs stuck to the paintwork and no amount of 'waxing' would shift them :?

Sooo, I bought a Maguires Clay Bar kit from Halfords and has a go! ....bloody hell it's well easy   it was actually a pleasure to do and only took about 30 minutes to do the whole car

The results are staggering 8) a really REALLY smooth paint finish like polished glass 8)

I followed the process with a Megs Paint Cleaner, a Megs Polish and Megs Carnuba Wax and it's great and really easy too - so in other words I carried out 4 processes on the whole car and I reckon the whole lot took about 2 hours

I'd been getting this polish/wax thing all wrong :? the 'Wax' is the last part and forms a nice seal to whatever other process you've done. A 'Polish' is what the paintwork needs to create a nice finish and help with swirls/marks and a clay bar first makes all the other step *really* easy 8)

I'd also recommend a Microfibre Towel for buffing/removing the polishes.

(sorry to the Megs guy on here with the on-line store but I was bored on Sunday and *had* to get the stuff immediately - to be fair Halfords had it all on a 3 for 2 offer so wan't too bad, I'll remember you next time though for sure).

I knew you'd say that but I didn't do any before and afters  I just wanted to get on with it :)

I'll get some of it now today but the paint needs to be 'felt' in fact I can't stop running my fingers over it

I need to take a clay bar to mine, trying to get the tar off using bug+tar remover is a painfully tedious process
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Just wondering, between this lot & the kit you got for washing the 406 around crimbo...

a) Have you still got room to get the car in the garage?
b) If it's not too nosey, how much is your annual valetting budget?
c) Are you an MP?
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Tee hee :) you know what Doggy to be honest I've struggled for years and years and always made sure the Wife and Tea Pot Lids came first and if (just if) I was lucky I might be able to treat myself to a bottle of cheapo tyre dressing to please my car cleaning hobby/habit. At the moment I'm lucky enough to be able to afford stuff that I want so I just buy it and enjoy it and the Family are still being treated the same.

I'm finding that buying the proper stuff pays dividends too but also I'm keeping my cars in tip top order (you should have seen the guys face when he came to buy my 406, he bought it there and then for the right price because it was in nice order).

Next on my list is a proper car cleaning bucket on wheels with a grit arrester in the bottom 8)

Oh, and a Petrol-powered lawn strimmer - gotta get me one of those just for the noise it makes

BTW I don't gamble, don't smoke and don't go to pubs (although I am an expert home Stella drinker).......god I'm boring :(
