Air con to!!

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

The smell's caused by mould, fungus, etc growing in the vents, and you can buy products from Halfords which'll sort it out (or try to!) for you. They generally involve you turning recirc on, letting an aerosol off in the back and leaving it running for some time

Wait till it smells like piss, then you'll be complaining

My 406 was pleasingly odour free in this respect but interior house keeping (hoover/dust) helps a *lot* as does regular Polen Filter changes.

Basically in cars with climate control the air conditioning is turned on/off automatically rather than being 'on' all the time.

Unfortunately when the a/c is in one of it's 'off' periods then the moisture in the heater matrix box, ducting and grilles is allowed to rise to a temperature that propagates bacterial fungi and gives this 'musty' smell  it can be gotton rid of by a proper anti-fungal treatment at an a/c specialist (who put a chemical wash across/through the evaporator) it costs about £45.00 and they will guarantee it for 12 months or so.

There is also a Wynnes treatment which is basically and open-ended deoderant canister which you 'let off' in the floor well and get the hell outta there but when I tried one it didn't really work too well.

One top tip my a/c guy told me was to run the heating at MAX for 20 mins or so and this will kill at least 60% of the bacteria :supafrisk:

HI,

Comma make a good product which actually smells very nice for a while too!
I bought two. One for the interior recirculating as per instructions and the other I sprayed down the inlet
with the pollen filter removed.

I just wish that I could apply the same treatment to some of my passengers as they also stink of piss
from time to time.............

Don't forget to change the cabin (pollen) filter.

This may surprise or shock some but a common problem is cats piss type of smell, this I was told by an A/c manufacturer is due to the base ingredients of cheap perfume or aftershave, and the industry (in Japan) has spent loads of Yen trying to overcome it. Current commercial product is "Smelly Jelly" but I dont think it could be used on car a/c as you need to get to the (evaporator) or matrix to fit it. (Looks like a jumbo winegum)

Remove pollen filter, turn on heater blower and squirt anti bacterial spray - from the cleaning product section of your supermarket - into the ducting over the matrix etc. Continue spraying whilst cycling the heater control between hot & cold. Leave overnight and replace new pollen filter. This will work in 99% of cases - really bad ones may need a repeat treatment. The anti bacterial spray is, in essence (!), all that you will buy from a motor factor just with a little perfume, a special bottle and an even more special price!
