Diesel Bob recommends either 10 or 15W-40 semi-synthetic for turbo diesels (claims it is less likely to weep past turbo seals).
As for brands, I usually just buys Halford's smart price. Does anyone reckon it's rubbish stuff?

Re: where do you buy your oil
HI,
Usually, I buy from my local factor as often as possible as the loyalty tends to pay off in decent prices for when I get my 'bigger'stuff like exhausts/cambelts/shockers etc.
I tend to buy either their Comma or Valvoline (Max Life) 10 to 15/40 semi synthetic around the £15 mark.
If you are really strapped go get Wilkinsons 15/40 semi synthetic for around the £9 mark.
Ive used it and the others over the years with no problems. the difference between the 10 and 15 doesnt seem to make
any dicenable difference to the driving or the life expectancy in my own case.
Slik 50 once every 60,000 does work also. I added it to my old Montego deisel at 200k and didnt ever need to top up
between services ever again and that ran up to 400k as did my last D8. I understand the running gear is still in use but the body disintegrated many years ago like most monty's always did , despite my best efforts.
In fact most of my engine problems/faliures have been caused by inherent manufacturers design weaknesses.
The Monty's exposed cambelt roller drags bust fanbelts in.
Weak XUD conrods.....
Crap HDi tensioners with plazzy brittling rollers.
So as long as you do your regular changes with a decent oil then its probably the least of your worries.
Personally in my experience I generally worry more about the cooling system and timing gear.
