Hi Wilko,
No, you're not thick - this is all confusing to those who have only recently got a 406 (like myself).
Yours is a D8, which is another way of saying it's a Mk.1 model. Yours will have a slatted grill on the front, on either side of the heraldic lion badge. These were produced up until 1999.
The D9, like mine, is the Mk.2 model. It has a meshed grill on the front, on either side of the heraldic lion badge. These were produced from late 1999 to 2005, when 406 production was ceased in favour of the new 407.
There are other differences, but that's the big one that you'll notice first.
Hope this helps!
Cheers
Graeme

So how does a fellow tell a D8 from a D9 with the coops?

I don't think you can from the outside. Interior is obvious

Re: type d8 or d9
Isn't the lower grille slightly different?
Re: type d8 or d9
I thought the very late D9 coupes were given new bumpers. They were ugly, made it look like a 407 impersonation. Took the whole look off the coupe. But the 1999-2003ish ones were the same as the D8 at the front me thinks.

Re: type d8 or d9
Correct. *very* late D9s. That's pretty much the only way to tell from the outside, bar reading the number plateeoin27 wrote:I thought the very late D9 coupes were given new bumpers. They were ugly
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Re: type d8 or d9
Another way to spot the difference is with the engines: 1.9 and 2.1 TDs are D8, whereas 2.0 and 2.2 HDIs are D9. Well, mostly. I've seen one HDI D8 on Ebay and one more in real life, but it's still a good rule of thumb.
Also, if you've got a computer constantly giving you grief for no good reason, it's a D9. Which is why I won't buy one :p
