Engine Whine

Post by peugeot406rapier »

hello everyone,

since i got the car ive had a whine coming from the engine when it starts up it goes when its been running for about 10 mins or when the temp is about 60 upwards its nothing to do with the gearbox or clutch as it does it when not in gear but when the revs pick up it gets a bit louders and high pitched but over about 3500 it goes im thinking it might be a pulley or fan that needs lubrication or bearing? does anyone else have any ideas its not really loud its only as loud as the engine is on tick over its just really annoying

thanks

Which engine?
Possibly something around the aux belt, alternator, power steering pump or air con compressor bearings.
406 estate, 2.1TD, I fixed her, then part exchanged her for a Mercedes E300TD Avantgarde Estate.
Hmmmm, straight 6 goodness!

I'd go with an aux belt replacement. While your old one's off, check the pulleys, alternator, pas pump, etc by turning them by hand and look for any squeaking, roughness or play

its a 1.8 petrol, well i may try the belt then but its not a squeal or squeak its a whine i was guessing a pulley may be to blame as when the A/C is on i get a whine from an engine bay so perhaps its the A/C Pump pulley?

I've had a couple of cars with similar symptoms, in my case it was the water pump

Aye, see if it whines with the aux belt off

May as well change the belt while you've got it off anyhow :)
