NOISY TAPPETS/VIBRATION

Post by marco2002 »

Hi
Just noticed in the last week or so that the tappets on the 406Hdi (110) seem noisier than usual. Also noticed that the engine seems to be struggling up a hill near where i live. Used to be able to go up it in 3rd gear easily. Now i have to drop it down a gear to 2nd. The noise of the tappets is louder at speed as well. Driving along at 60mph you can hear them chattering. Changed the oil about a month ago now done 2000miles since then. Car has done 160K so far hoping for a few more miles!

Where is the best place to start? Turbo still seems to be working okay. Can hear it whistling as its always done.

One other thing there is a slight vibration on the drivers side which is noticeable at slow speeds car used to be quite good at doing 30mph in 5th gear. Won't do it anymore if you try the vibration becomes apparent. Almost sounds like when you try to drive along in too high a gear and have to drop it down a gear otherwise it will stall or make that awful noise.

Any help or advice would help. Off to a peugeot garage tommorow that i've used before just to see what they think........

Thanks marco

Could be oil contamination in the hydraulic lifters causing a bit of slack and the cam/followers being noisy (a metal smacking noise) or it could be the fuel injector(s) even.

Let us know how you get on.

Are you sure you haven't put really thick oil in by mistake like a 20W/50 or whatever?

Hi
update on the 406 hdi. Went in the garage today and they test drove it and checked all the belts and pulleys and they can find nothing wrong must just be me. Had the brakes looked at on the back and all okay. N/S/F Flexi hose is being done on friday and i've managed to get a new seat belt as the drivers side belt is fraying a bit so thought it time to replace. MOT is is on monday fingers crossed all will be well. Putting some forte fuel conditioner in over the weekend to help with the emmisions..

I will let you know how the MOT goes not spent too much so far.

Thanks
Marco

Same deal on my last 406, its the injectors more than likely. A new injector rail will do the job. Although, i had no power loss.Could be two problems here

Hi
ecided to add some redex to the fuel today. Guess what? Seems to have cured the flat spot i had at 60mph the injectors must have been a bit clogged . The tappety noise seems to have quitened down and it now sounds the same as it did before!

Mechanic said the other day to put some bp ultimate diesel in now and again as it has a detergent in it and it will give it a good clearout. I guess its similar to the redex or forte diesel conditioner.......
