from what we understand from dvla it's all based on the year of manufacture if it was after 2002 then it needs to have the new style (smaller but single font letters) a bsu sticker the plate makers name and post code and for the plate maker to record details for the plate to be made (this last thing is a blanket thing we have to do it for everyone regardless of age of car)
If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you !!!!!
It's based on the year the plate was manufactured - because the first raft of the regs were introduced in 2002, then by default all cars from then have to comply,
Conversely, and older car fitted with new plates also has to comply, though in reality there's also the issue of proving when the plate was made on older cars. That said, with the manufacture of 'show' plates etc now covered by the regs, it's theoretically not possible to obtain non BS/DVLA spec plates...although reality still differs and they can still be bought, and probably will for a while yet.
Lol gotta love those newish laws
On a slight rant why do customers insist on yelling at us when they don't bring the correct documentation in or because they don't like the company logo on their plate
*rant over carry on*
