THINKING OF BUYING 406I
I AM THINKING OF BUYING A 1999 406 LX HDI (110), ITS ON EBAY, ARE THEY A GOOD BUY AT THIS AGE, ANY PROBLEMS I SHOULD BE LOOKING FOR, CHEERS.
Re: THINKING OF BUYING 406I
They're a good car with a strong engine. The usual things to look out for are that all the electrical things work, the clutch isn't slipping, it's not overdue a cambelt change, and that the aircon blows cold.
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Also listen for funny sounds from the fuel lift pump and check condition of bottom crank pulley!mjb wrote:They're a good car with a strong engine. Roger that, and ensure the crank pulley was replaced with the cambelt. If it wasn't, it's indicative of a car maintained on the cheap.
Other than that, DMF! Any strange rattles on idle, or squeaks and lurching when taking up drive and pulling away should have you running a mile.

Well, actually, I would not run a mile here because it is my belief that most if not all HDi 110's of a certain age will be running with a ruined DMF but it shouldn't really put you off unless the clutch is slipping badly or otherwise unusable. More I would use it as a bargaining tool if you find an otherwise nice car.turbolag wrote:Other than that, DMF! I think 5 years is about your lot for the DMF, or around 90,000 miles say. There are also solid conversions out there but not sure if anyone on here has tried one yet. My DMF was shot but it was still like it 3 years later when I sold it on. As long as you're sympathetic with the thing you can run it for ages imo.

Welly, I'm only suggesting our hero walks on by if the DMF is suspect. If it's fine, then there's no reason not to delve deeper.
If the DMF is suspect, why chance it? It's not like the 406 is in short supply, and an alternative car can be found with ease.
One with a suspect DMF, or one with a decent DMF - which would you choose? Why guff about making offers, only to then have to spend time, effort and wonga fixing it, when the click of a mouse will find dozens of alternative 406s for sale, many of which would be fine in this regard?
Why buy a car you have to nurse along sympathetically, when you could buy a perfectly sound one instead?
