Major service - what parts to replace?

Post by Captain Jack »

Hello,

In less that 4000 miles (around 1,5 months), I intend to run the car through a major service. The bits I will get the garage to replace are:

Cam belt
Water pump
Alternator belt

I am also thinking of replacing the bottom pulley as it seems to be an annoying part that goes wrong far too often. It doesn't seem to be giving me any trouble at the moment, but I like to be prepared.

Also, once the service is done and I have some more money saved up, I will be getting the car "chipped" Hopefully, the engine won't fall out. In light of this, is there anything else I should replace? It's making a weird grumbling noise just before hitting the turbo, almost like a hole in the eggsauce, but Mr Welton suggested it could also be an engine mounting. I had a look at the driver's side mount and it seems OK, but I can't find any other ones!

Hello!

If you're going to chip it then I'd definately check the rear engine mount. It's a pig to see and requires you to crawl under and look up towards the turbo. If your engine moves at all when you blip the gas then the rear mount is worn. I know this cos when I had the new mount the engine was solid after,

Here's the new mount in place, there's the oil sump look:

Here's the old one:

My knackered mounting cost me a down pipe and CAT and an intercooler hose!

I'd also very recommend flushing and changing the coolant.

Yikes, if it's a pig to see, I guess it's a pig to replace too! Another garage job?

Is it just 1 rear mount or are there 2 on each side?

One bottom mount, but (at least on some engines) it needs the driveshaft removing

Yes it's a pig to replace. Drive shaft out, gear oil out, press out bush on a bench, press-in new bush, re-assemble etc.

Probably £120.00 job for a £12.00 bush

*Transforms* the way it drives though 8)

Pah...

Actually, my gear stick moves in 5th when I blip the throttle. Another sign?

Mine did that, although I can't say I noticed it improved that much after the mount was changed. I think a tiny bit of gearbox movement is exagerated through the (fairly long) gear stick.

(morning by the way)

OK, it's booked!

On Sunday, I have managed to do a simple service, i.e. oil change, fuel filter, oil filter, air filter and pollen filter. Total cost of parts £50-ish (seems more than what I paid last time). The oil filter is an absolute pig to unscrew, even though I have this weird chain wrench thingy. Is there an easier way to unscrew the thing? There's loads more room in the engine bay with an HDI engine in than my old 2.1TD and it was still a pig. Surprisingly, the fuel filter was relatively easy to open...

Anyway, things I've asked the garage to do:

Timing Belt
Water Pump (coolant change, while they are at it)
Fix my damn oil leak
Change bottom MOUNT - had a look underneath and on eye it looked OK. But the engine can be rocked by hand, so I reckon it's shot
Fix tracking - keeps veering to the left

After that it should be as good as new. Decided to give the bottom pulley a miss as I am broke enough as it is...

You, I, understand, cannot over here.

I'm guessing you're having the rear lower engine mount replaced.

Cap'n, prepare yourself for a circa £700.00 bill fella :|

I think that chap with the blown V6 might have something to add...

By the way... did anyone with an HDi change any injectors yet? WOnder if this only applies to the 16 valve 2.0 (or am I selling the wrong car?)
