Not a regular so thanks in advance for any advise you can give me.
I have an S-reg 406 1.9TD estate. It has a fault which is getting more regular where the engine turns over fine but will not start. I took the top of an injector off and noticed no diesel coming through so took a look at the fuel pump under the back seat. No sound came from this with the ignition on so I tried to remove it for a closer inspection. I couldn't turn the collar so I resorted to hitting this with a screw driver and hammer to loosen it and this seems to un-seize the pump.
Now, whenever the car doesn't start, hitting the top of this pump with a wrench or hammer seems to fix the problem so I'm guessing the pump is seizing. Is this a common fault? What part needs replacing and where is a good place to get this?

I could be talking pure cobblers here, (& if so, someone will hopefully correct me), but I don't think 1.9TD's have a pump in the tank.
There is a strainer in there, which is known to block and could easily cause your problem. Had this on my bro's 1.9TD 306, it was completely solid, no fuel flow at all.

According to Haynes' Encyclopaedia of Falsehoods, it dun't got one. Rather, the lift pump is incorporated in to the engine fuel pump.

There is no pump here, I have a 2.1TD, search for a post called before and after, This is when I took mine out and shows what I saw.
406 estate, 2.1TD, I fixed her, then part exchanged her for a Mercedes E300TD Avantgarde Estate.

Thanks guys, I've confirmd this by taking off the electrical connector between the inlet and outlet hoses. I assumed a pump was there as there are four wires in the loom, but the connector only has two pins, hence it must be a sender only.
I've looked at the before and after post, I'm guessing this is the case with my issue, a clotted filter. Maybe there's a lot of gunk and a good whack is enough to get some diesel through to start.
One way to find out, I'll have a look!
