Rear Lower Engine Mount
Got a new rear lower engine mount but i read in haynes i have to remove the drive shaft is this really necessary or can i it with the shaft in also could this be what was contributing towards a slight jerk when changing gear

It seems as though it is possible, (see here)

Take out the driveshaft and unbolt the casing from the engine, get the bush pressed out and in by a local garage, or cut out the old one and squeeze the new one in with a large vice, it will take a lot less messing about with the driveshaft out and the casing removed, it isn't that difficult to remove the driveshaft.

I will have to give it a go at my dads tomorrow borrow a few tools just hope the weather isnt p****ng it down again

Ok havent had chance today as had to do a few other jobs but thought i would upload a photo for others to see its split quite badly at the back i will see if there is a way of doing it without driveshaft removal first as it wil make my life easier if i do i will let you know how i did it.

Ther'es no doubt that you could do it without removing the driveshaft, you have to cut out the old rubber, cut slots in the metal casing of the bush, then knock out the bush.
To fit the new one, clean up the mounting casing and grease it, then grind a chamfer on the new bush casing, clean the outer casing with emery, then knock in the new bush with a large hammer....or get a long nut and bolt with flat plates either end and screw the new bush in that way.

I am thinking of doing this in the week with a piece of pipe and a vice, we'll see!
406 estate, 2.1TD, I fixed her, then part exchanged her for a Mercedes E300TD Avantgarde Estate.

I have a clam was thinking about clamping it in though i suspect that will be pretty difficult if i do but wort a try

Unless you've got access to some proper ramps I'd fetch the driveshaft out!
When I had my mount replaced the car felt *completely* different afterwards - smoother clutch and down-changes and zero jurking/lurching when on/off the throttle at low speeds.
In my opinion replacing the Lower Mount of a HDi is THE most important and worthy job to do.
If you are in any doubt about the job then use a garage it should cost no more than £150.00. I used to use a garage, pay on me credit card, then split it over 2 or 3 months

Getting it done this weekend but not paying peugeot stealers to do it my dad said he done both his 406's years back and has a little or should i say big tool to do it he didnt realise he had though if you see my dads workshop andf the 50 years worth of tools and equipment you would get a bit lost.

I already got my engine mount "BUT" i noticed on ebay you can buy powerflex mounts for smaller pugs which look a piece of pi$$ to fit anyone know if you can get these for the 406's

What hasn't been asked here is the engine and the age of the car. Later D9s have a slightly different lower mount which has a replaceable bush. On these it's possible to replace the bush in situ. On ES9J4 V6s at least, driveshaft removal is extremely difficult, time consuming and physically painful without dropping the subframe, getting it back in would be nigh-on impossible.
