Re: FAQ - 406 D8 petrol (Excl. V6) running and starting problem
***UPDATE***
Hi guys....
Got my 406 back from Autosolutions here in Reading..... Still not fixed !!!
I will now type in exactly what is written on the invoice..
I just what some of you on here to give me your opinions as to their diagnostics please..
Here goes..
"Investigate cause of erratic engine idle, misfire and power loss. Carry out DIAG2000 fault code and running test. Carry out engine ECU firmware download. Re-initialise engine ECU and road test.
No faults were recorded in the ECU memory.
The running parameters check highlighted a fault with the engine ECU's interpretation of the coolant temperature (reading decreasing as temperature increased). This fault will cause poor mixture and idle control. The download and reset has rectified this problem.
The misfire is not apparent with a hot engine and may be caused by sticking cam followers (a common fault with this engine)."
*****************
There you go, thats the report I got back.
The car still runs lumpy until hot (check my previous posts for full details).
The car is a 2001 D9 2ltr with 48k on the clock. In top condition other than this running problem....
Getting to the stage now where if I can't get it sorted I'm going to have to let the car go and start with something else. This is really bugging the hell out of me...
Is this also true about the cam followers ??
PLEASE HEEEEELP !!!!
Cheers
Nick

Re: FAQ - 406 D8 petrol (Excl. V6) running and starting problem
I certainly haven't heard it's a "common problem" at all.
In my opinion if you've got sticking cam followers you'd get some ticking noise along with the lumpy running.
It's probably something really silly and cheap but finding it could be tricky
Dare I suggest going to Peugeot?

Re: FAQ - 406 D8 petrol (Excl. V6) running and starting problem
Hi again,
Have changed the temp sensor now (3 days ago) and the problem is still there...
Euro car parts supplied the new sensor of the shelf, well done for that..
Now, I wonder what's next to change......?
I have cleaned the idle air control valve but wonder if I should get a new one....
Trouble is my symptoms go away once the engine has been at running temp for a while.
Any more ideas people ?
Cheers

Re: FAQ - 406 D8 petrol (Excl. V6) running and starting problem
have tried to follow the instructions on this post and got stuck on the TDC sensor. My car does not appear to have one? Or, at least, in the place it is supposed to be in the post. Haines manual was of little help too.
I have tried many things, changed a few bits and still my fault is not cured. Basically it turns, fires then dies. If I am lucky then it will start and I can keep the revs up (with random engine complete stop) to a point where is it warm. it will then run.
most of the time it turns, fires a couple of times then dies.
supposed to be on holiday in it the end of the week.......not looking good.
so my question. where is the TDC on a 2L 16v R plate?
or any other suggestions much appreciated.

Hi all i have exactly the same problem as lukas
i was thinkin the lambda sensor but not sure.
with sensor unplugged its exactly the same
is there any way to test the lambda sensor with a AVO/Circuit tester??
the exhaust smells very rich!!! and the MPG is abismal but i have been doin a lot of town driving so unsure on that.
any help would be Greatly appreciated as i love this motor
PS done 78k had recent service, and cam belt etc. is all up together
What ever the problem it has cooked my cat. and only passed the MOT by 0.01%

I've heard that the lambda sensor can cause rough idling, your emissions would be way off as well. Don't know how you test it though...

Re: FAQ - 406 D8 petrol (Excl. V6) running and starting problem
I seriously need to unplug my lambda and put a variable sensor in its place so I can tell what it does to the car's behaviour....
Someone buy me a spare 406? ;)

<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang
Re: FAQ - 406 D8 petrol (Excl. V6) running and starting problem
So will unpluging the Lambda sensor make the ECU think its giving a normal reading?
Thanks
Thanks
