how do i tell if my engines an hdi

well just bought the 98 406 its a 2088cc turbo diesel. how do i tell if its an HDI and whats the advantages if it is ?

HDis didn't come long until later - you've got the 110bhp 2.1TD which is considered a LOT more reliable than the HDi

My 2.1 wasn't any less economical than my HDi either.

Regular servicing, belts etc, it'll go on forever

I read somewhere that the 2.1TD lump was considered the worst PSA diesel engine ever. I guess my 70,000 trouble-free miles were a fluke then.

Mind you, HDIs can run for a fair while too, if taken care of properly.

I love that 2.1, its a 12 Valve turbo in case you didn't know.

I had the 2.1 in a 605 STDT with 230,000 miles and it pulled like a train

Generally if it sounds well and goes well then you're on to a good'un.

i must admit im fairly impressed on how it pulls. the misses had a mondeo before this and she liked that but even she has admitted she preffers the 406 to drive and likes the way it pulls compared to her old mondeo. what problems if any should i look out for with the 2.1? is the belt an easy job ?

Really... nothing went wrong with my 2.1 engine. The only issue I had was a duff injector number 1 and er... that's it. High pressure fuel pump can be costly if it dies but I am pretty sure that's rare.

Just ensure you do a lot of preventative maintenance and regular servicing and you'll be good.

It's a pain in the arse engine to work on, though, as there's very little space to do anything
