"P" reg 406 1.9td smoke problem
I have just acquired a very cheap 406 1.9td diesel.
starts and sound perfectly fine, however when i press the accelerates pedal the engine accelerates slowly and a bit of black smoke comes out. (enough to fail a MOT)
According to the Haynes manual fuel system is electronically managed and there are a few sensors around.
anyone have any idea which one of these could be at fault, or could it be something else?
Thanks in advance!

Re: "P" reg 406 1.9td smoke problem
The first thing to do is give it an Italian tune up (go out and thrash it), turbo diesels don't like to driven by grandad and need to be worked from time to time just to blow out the cobwebs.

Re: "P" reg 406 1.9td smoke problem
On a p plate, it would be the mechanical (not fully electronic) pump, so if the worst comes to the worst, you could just turn down the fueling on the pump. In fact it might even be smoking due to somebody playing with the pump in order to give it a bit more umph.vortexco wrote:I have just acquired a very cheap 406 1.9td diesel.

If it's not picking up well, have you checked the usual problems like blocked air filter, etc

Re: "P" reg 406 1.9td smoke problem
I've had a look at the air filter, it's not bright yellow, but it's no worse than my diesel 405 air filter either (maybe a little better)
Also i have done some googling this afternoon and one site mentions a MASS air flow failing or a sticky EGR Valve. I have no idea what these things are.
Could they have anything to do with it?
also i don't thing that there is a lack of power either, but it's not quite as fast as my 405 1.9tdi "N" reg. But the 406 does not have a Intercooler and the 406 is a little heavyer, so maybe this is why (not that much difference between the two).
Any help would be welcomed
Thank you

Re: "P" reg 406 1.9td smoke problem
Okay, the 406 td doesn't have a MAF, it's a mechanical diesel. Your 405 was a td not a tdi. the 406 does have an intercooler, it's larger than the unit on the 405 and it's down in front of the coolant radiator.vortexco wrote:I've had a look at the air filter, it's not bright yellow, but it's no worse than my diesel 405 air filter either (maybe a little better)

Re: "P" reg 406 1.9td smoke problem
Shows how much i know!!
Does my 406 still have a EGR Valve (what ever that it)??
A better way to discribe the acceleration problem is when the car is stationary and out of gear if i quickly put the accelerator pedal to the floor the engine seems to take ages to rev to full, like a delay when you push the pedal, it also puffs out a bit of black smoke!
Can't seem to work out why?
thank you
Carl

This discription might help a little better,
If the car is stationary and out of gear, and i press the accelerator right down the engine doesn't rev no where near as quick as it should (compared to every other car i've driven) and i little black smoke purs out the back.
So theres no MAF, is there still i EGR Valve? What does this do?
Thank you
Carl

Air filter, in-tank fuel strainer gunged up, stick some Redex in the tank and give him a good thrashing, he'll love it!

Re: "P" reg 406 1.9td smoke problem
Sounds like a great idea, however the car has no MOT or Tax at the moment so i can't drive it on the road!
Basically i got it as an MOT failure as the owner couldn't be bothered to do the work.
It has lots of other little issues that i can easily repair, but i wanted to sort this one out first!
Is there another way of maybe cleaning the fuel strainer without having to drive it around? And maybe for the fuel filter i'll just borrow the one out of my 405?
Thank you

Well, yes, you clean the strainer by removing the back seats and withdrawing the unit from the top of the fuel tank. This is probably not something to attempt whilst driving along.
But you do really, really need to be putting this car through its MOT when it's super nice and hot i.e. you need to run that bastard up and down the motorway like it's going out of fashion ^^

Actually,
there is one other little thing?
what is a fuel strainer, is it some kind of sponge? what does it look like?

Struggling to rev does sound like fuel starvation. Fresh fuel filter and clean the strainer (viewtopic.php?f=1&t=7355&p=73353&hilit= ... ter#p73031)vortexco wrote:Actually,

Lift the back seats, pop out the black plastic cover, disconnect the wires from the unit. tie string or similar to the two pipes (helps to find them when you put them back), undo the pipe (usually two once use clips, so put some screw clips back instead), twist the locking collar (might need some persuasion) then lift out the filter/fuel gauge unit. clean the gauze and refit the lot.

Think there will be on a p plate. It feeds some of the exhaust soot back into the air intake to improve the emissions.vortexco wrote:... is there still i EGR Valve? What does this do?

Re: "P" reg 406 1.9td smoke problem
I have removed and refitted my Fuel strainer and it is perfectly clean.
I have also managed to track the slow aceleration to some weird contracption on the fuel pump under the bonnet. It's like a small black shock absorber that connects to the accelerator arm on the pump. If i just grab the accelerator arm and accelerate it quickly to full then the engine accelerates quickly also.
Could i remove this thing, or should i get a new one?
Also could the EGR valve be responsable for my black smoke, or is it time to look at my injectors? (Air filter is cleaner than my 405 and that runs ok)
If it could be my injectors then can you tell by looking at them out of the engine if they need replacing or cleaning? (maybe i could swap them for the ones in my 405 to see)
Sorry for all the questions, but unfortunatley my expertise is in computers not cars!
thank you in advance
