rear wheel bearing
hi all im new here
had a problem with the wifes rear passenger wheel bearing. the wheel wobbled.
changed the bearing for a brand new one. it still wobbles. i have been told there is a washer missing that should go on before the 42mm nut. is this true or is something else wrong with it?
cheers guys

Re: rear wheel bearing
Are you sure it's the bearing and not one of the bushes in the bottom of the hub? Does the whole hub assembly move or just the mounting face?

Re: rear wheel bearing
Just checked on service box and there is no washer before the nut on either the D8 or D9 rear wheel bearing.

Re: rear wheel bearing
Just to add to what Chief has said:
The main cause of wheel wobble on these is the top link; I would change the antirollbar links and top links as a matter of course. Also check condition of antirollbar bushes.
Watch out for the positioning on the top link as it adjusts the toe-in/toe-out on the wheel. I changed these parts and got full wheel alignment done.

First of all...safely jack up the car and try to move the wheel up and down and side to side, investigate any movement.
I would also spin the wheel and check for any "wobble" on the tyre, meaning an out of shape tyre...this would be my guess for the "wobble", but don't discount the items already mentioned, these items would be visible with up and down or side to side play.

Re: rear wheel bearing
had a look this morning still unsure though. the wheel feels as if it isnt done up enough but the bolts are tight. the tyre is fine its fairly new. if i hold the rim it wobbles side to side and up and down nothing else moves just the rim.
Re: rear wheel bearing
Get someone to press the brake whilst you feel for the movement in the wheel, if the movement is removed with the brake pressed, then it definitely is connected to your wheel bearing.
I assume you have replaced the whole hub assembly? It is the same part as came off? You cleaned up the hub shaft before you fitted the hub and the hub slid on easily up to its limit?
To check for a missing washer, undo the other side to see if there is a washer on there.

Re: rear wheel bearing
whole hub assembly? we change the complete wheel bearing. clean all parts before putting them back on
Re: rear wheel bearing
The wheel bearing comes complete as a hub unit, ie, the hub where the wheel bolts onto.

Re: rear wheel bearing
I`ve just changed one of my rear hubs due to abs problems. From looking around, speaking to other people & from what it says in my workshop manual,it is recomended to change the complete hub assembly as the bearings stand a good chance of being damaged upon removal etc.So if you have only renewed the bearings, could this be the problem??
Also, dont take this the wrong way & i dont want to offend you,but the nut IS tight???I used my 3/4 inch drive breaker bar & scaffold tube to tighten the nut to the point that i was lifting the rear of the car up!!Theres also the race??that needs chiseling in to secure the hub nut.
