Hi,
I've been having a strange engine noise lately, it sounds like a sort of chirping noise, heres a recording of it, you can hear it in the background at about 3 seconds in: (the sound isnt very good on my phone and my engine doesnt really sound as rough as it makes out)

I've noticed that one of the rollers on my aux belt is moving from side to side alot, and the AC clutch is cutting in and out...not sure if that does that anyway
the crankshaft damper has also gone green around the bolt....i dont see any bits of metal flying about when i rev, but i usually hear that chirping noise, anyone know what this could be?
Cheers?
Matt.

Re: Engine Noise
I think the noise is either your auxillary belt or the tensioner pulley needs attention/replacement.
I would spray WD40 on the belt with the engine running (keep hands away from the belt) inside and out, then if the noise has gone, strip off the belt and check out the belt and tensioner, it could just be dirt, but it could be a failing tensioner pulley.

Re: Engine Noise
I sprayed the pulleys and belt with some wd40 but its still chirping
I did notice that there are some small cracks starting to appear in the belt and a theres a very small fray at the edge of one section of the aux belt so i think its best to replace it anyway before it breaks
should the tensioner have any side to side movement? mine is moving quite a lot

Re: Engine Noise
I would take off the belt and run the engine, if the noise is still there, then I would be thinking bottom crank pulley needs replacing.
I would also replace that tensioner pulley as well as the fan belt.

Re: Engine Noise
i replaced the tensioner, belt and eccentric roller today, all of them were very well worn, the tensioner roller was really loose and just about ready to fly off so i'm happy i caught in time
started it up without the belt and the chirp noise was still there and i noticed specs of metal and a lot of a green dust all around the crankshaft pulley, plus i can move it easily by hand myself, im not sure if its supposed to do that, i've got a pulley on order and so i'll fit that next weekend before it completely breaks, i'm pretty sure its in the early stages of failure, so i'm hoping the noise will disappear when i replace the pulley
got the dayco OEM supplier parts for the eccentric roller, tenioner and belt on ebay for a good price so i'm hoping they'll last for good while

Re: Engine Noise
Is the chirping noise when you rev / blip the throttle on tickover?
Does it make a loud chirp/squeak when you turn it off?
If so, it could be the DMF squeaking. My 110 hdi does it, has done for 20k now...

Re: Engine Noise
it doesnt do it when i turn it off, its just very subtle at the moment but you can still tell its there
hmmmm, if its the flywheel would you expect it to happen when pulling away using clutch control and no acceleration?

Re: Engine Noise
Mine chirrups on blipping the throttle, and squeaks when turning the engine off.
Ive tried mine when creeping in traffic, ie no accelerator and it squeaks then as well LOL!
Most posts on here relating to squeaky DMF's seem to suggest they can go on for ages like that
