Another bottom mount thread.

Right, think i've got a failing/failed bottom mount, get to about 2,500rpm and i get a whirring, rubbing sound which vibrates the whole car. If i change gear so the speed is constant but the revs drop, the vibration goes away.

Got home, had a brew, went out to get the car down to the workshop and put it on a 2 post ramp to get a better look. Turned the key and i was actually rocked back and forth in my seat there was that much movement from the engine!

Down to the workshop, on the ramp, mount is absolutely shot, detached from one side of the round sleeve and splitting at the top on the "thick bit" (if that makes sense!) Not to worry, i have a spare mount on my spare engine (i hoard things for a reason!), no wait, that rubber is shagged too

Ring around, get a rubber ordered, planning on fitting it to my spare mount, then swapping the rear mounts over (hopefully without separating the long driveshaft this time!)

BUT i get in the car to drive home (slowly) and the bloody thing drives like normal, no vibration, no shaking, nothing. huh?

Is this normal? Do they stop/start on shaking around? Or has me pushing it around with a bar moved something else and it's going to turn into a pig again in 24 hours?

Is this normal? Do they stop/start on shaking around? Or has me pushing it around with a bar moved something else and it's going to turn into a pig again in 24 hours?

Engine mounts don't suddenly get better. You could have what I believe have - a cylinder or 2 intermittently not working. Mine's down to the coil pack (I think/hope...) but I dunno what'd cause it on a diseasel.

My clutch is in a shocking state but every now and again, typically Monday morning, I can jump in a drive off with absolutely no problems at all. I figure a couple days to relax over the weekend does us all good

Damnit! bloody vibration has come back again, think i'll be ordering that mount now (found it on ebay for a fiver less than my trade account would give me, but gawd knows when it would arrive with the P.O. playing silly buggers right now.)

However driving everywhere at under 2000rpm does mean i've been using bugger all fuel

I'm 99.99% sure it's the back mount, i can drive at any speed, in any gear, but the moment i go above 2000rpm the vibration starts. It almost feels like something is rubbing the side of the tyre, but the vibration speed relates to the engine spped, not the road speed. And stopping & starting causes quite a bit of lurching.

My bottom mount is shagged too, noticed it while changing the oil..

Okay, had a fiddle today, just to see if i could wedge some chopped up exhaust rubbers into the gaps in the mount to give me a few days before i've got the funds to order a new mount (moved house, kids b-day then half term, not feeling to flush right now!)

The bottom two bolts were GONE the top bolt was GONE the one which doubles as a support for the pipe across the back of the block was LOOSE ohshit ohshit ohshit!

They were all there when i put the car on the ramp a week or so ago and i'm the only bugger that works on my car so i can't blame it on other peoples handiwork. Wondering if i could have over tightened them the last time the mount was off (did my clutch a few months ago) and damaged the threads and they've slowly work their way out over time? I've replaced all the bolts (complete with a snot load of thread tape) and things seem good a tight now.

However i can now hear the bloody wheelbearing again

Lesson is, you're never quite as good as you think.
